    Unable to access my files.

I have external hdd on which all my music, pictures, movies, docs,... are stored.
Haven't used it since Win 8 cp installation. Now I plugged it in my computer, but there's a security issue.
for every file and folder I have to add me as owner. That's no good since there is about 8000 files.
    How can I fix it?

You should be able to access all those files by changing the security settings of the drive you need full access too.
The link below shows you how to do that.

    What about ...

    What about:
    • Using a Live Linux CD to copy the files to another location.
    • Using a friend's PC.
    • Reinstalling Windows 7.

Right click on your J drive, then hit properties.
    Click on the Security tab
    Click "edit"
    Click "add"
type in "everyone" then "check names"
    ensure "everyone" has full control.
    save and save

otherwise you have to take ownership.

In addition make sure you cascade the permissions down your directory tree.

If you follow IceFire's suggestion, you should cascade "Everyone" (not "System" as seen in those pictures).

Actually I find taking owership is the only thing that works.

I have two drives, with three partitions: Windows 7, Windows 8, and files.

I've found that the only way to view files on both OSs is to set owner to Everyone, with Everyone having full access. (in fact, I've deleted all registered access users except for Everyone and SYSTEM. now works perfectly fine)

    Error Checking?

You often need both (you definitely need permission).
You can own files/folders and yet have no permissions (very annoying).

    I haven't encountered that problem.
W8 can access my files exactly the same as W7 and XP.
    Caveat:
My programs, documents, pictures, music, videos, etc. are all on their own partitions.

I can sort of understand there being problems, if you are using the default locations (e.g. trying to access documents on the W7 partition, from W8).
Mirac7 is using an external drive, though.

Are you guys using a local login, or the Internet login?

I sometimes have a problem with my external HDD that I use for my TAFE course.
After I've plugged it in at TAFE, it often won't allow me to write to it at home.
My W7 claims that the HDD is "Read only".

If I run "Error checking" a couple of times, it behaves normally.

BTW, I misread your original post, sorry Mirac7.
