Solved Check Disk has been stuck at 11% for 2 hours - what to do?

I was having problems creating a System Image using Macrium Reflect free. On my last attempt I got Error 23 - cyclical something or other (can't remember the exact wording).

I researched this and found I had bad sectors. I also looked in the Windows Event log which said I had bad blocks (entries in both Macrium and Event log at same time, so I assumed they were related).

So having read various posts on the Macrium site and this forum I decided to do a check disk / repair on the C drive. I had previously run a check disk which said there were no errors, but this was before I looked in the Event log, which showed several entries related to a bad block, going back a while.

This started off fine after a reboot, but has been stuck at 11% for a couple of hours now.

My Dell uses a circle of dots to suggest activity and this is still going round and round, but the disk light is not flashing at all, which it normally does if something is happening.

So my question is: What are my options now?

Do I just leave it running in the hope something is happening?

Or is there any way to abort the process without causing damage?

I know there was a way to cancel in the seconds before the scan began but I don't know if this is still possible. And I don't recall which key it said to press either .

Or is it okay to power the machine down which will end the process?

And if I leave it running, after what period can I reasonably conclude that something has gone wrong?

Thank you

Be patient and wait. There are cases that will take 24 hrs depending on how bad your HD is.

Well they say that a watched pot never boils, so typically I moved away from the machine for a few minutes to post this, and when I looked again I was at a login screen.

I have no idea whether the check disk procedure completed successfully as I don't know where to look for this onformation, nor whether I would recognise it if I found it.

I did browse in the Event log and found a 'Dirty Shutdown' entry around the time the process stopped running. Which may have something to do with it, or may not .

So I will leave this thread open for a little while, in case anyone can suggest anything I can do to find out if the check disk process completed and what the results were.

That happens mostly when it runs into bad sector/s, if and when it goes thru download and use utility for that make of HDD.

Most likely it is hitting bad sectors. You can also check S.M.A.R.T. health with a Xubuntu Live DVD, with the GSmartControl app.

What is the manufacturer & model of the hard drive? How long have you owned this computer. An SSD may be in your very short future, if the laptop you have, is not that old. If you have an extended warranty with Dell. You can send it into them. Just remember to save any documents, pictures, video's. Also keep in mind that Dell will only do a out of the box install, when they put in a new hard drive.

A local computer shop (mom & pop, stay away from the likes of Best Buy), can do a image transfer. That way you do not lose anything, when they put in the new hard drive.

Thank you for all your responses.

Seems the check disk achieved something as I was able to do a Macrium backup for the first time ever :D

So I am hoping this is the end of my problems in this area on this machine anyway.
