As I have said previously I am new to Windows 8, now I am getting messages saying download 8.1 for free.
Question:: What is the difference? would it help me? mine is a household computer for fun, sending e-mails, checking news and weather and hammering the daylights out of Spider Solataire.

You do not really need it, if you have no problems with Windows, but it is recommended.

Support for Windows 8 ends in January 2016, so you can decide until then.

Windows 9 will be released within a year, so you can just upgrade to Windows 9 instead. :cool:

Go for it.

Use Macrium Reflect to backup your present system first.
If you don't like 8.1 restore to 8.

You'll love 8.1.
Next best thing since sliced bread. :)

I have 8.1.1 Pro.
It is truly a delight.

I have 8 on a usb.
I have 8 Pro on usb.
I have 8.1 on usb.

I like backups in case I need them.
I also have a set of Factory settings disks. :)

edit---You never know when Microsoft will pull the free download & make you pay for it. bawling.gif

Well Windows 8.1 Update 1 can bring some speed improvement, but upgrading can turn into a horror story.
I myself will never forget, that I have tried multiple times to upgrade to 8.1 for 2 days and failed. :mad:
Not to mention, that some people were then unable to boot neither 8 nor 8.1, so precious time wasted.

I went to the Store & clicked on 8.1 Pro & it installed nicely.
No problems.

I had though, updated all my drivers & got all available Windows Updates first.

As long as you prepare correctly, you should not have any problem:
  1. Use Free Macrium to backup the whole disk to an external harddrive
  2. Install all updates from Windows Updates
  3. From Admin Command Prompt, run 2 commands:
    - Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    - sfc /scannow
  4. Turn off Anti Virus/Anti Malwares Software
  5. Win+R->msconfig->Services and put a check mark on Hide all Microsoft services and disable all non microsoft services
  6. Reboot and run the update for Windows 8.1

Just upgraded the wife's Samsung Series 7 Ultra to Windows 8.1 with update 1 this past weekend. Just took an image before i started. Piece of cake.
