Can't get into BIOS, machine won't start

I have a a Toshiba Satellite P55t with windows 8.1. Today I used the Toshiba Password utility to set a User password, Rebooted the machine and got a "reboot and select proper device" error. Hitting F12, F2, Esc, nothing works. Putting the recovery DVD in does not work. Any suggestions on what to try next? Thank you.

Hold Function key (Fn) and then press F2 to get into the bios.

Thank you. I tried holding down the Fn+F2, Fn+F12, just F2, just F12, and I get the same error. I have tried it with my Toshiba system recovery disc and with an Ubuntu disc. I did upgrade the hard drive a couple of months ago, and have tried booting up with that drive attached to a USB port. Nothing. The only thing that comes up on the screen is the message to insert boot media and press a key.

Are there any other tricks I can try?

I hate Toshiba's .. for this exact issue. They can be a real handsome frog to get into the bios. Why do they not display the key sequence when you start it .. like Lenovo for example. Like .. idiots, and why I will never buy a Toshiba.

I don't know, if I could speed read fast enough mine boots so fast a Post screen would just be a blurr LOL

Toshiba Hardware utility method


The Toshiba Hardware utility (HWSetup) can also be used to change some of the settings if F2 or F12 does not work. This method may be the only way to access the BIOS settings on some laptops.

1. On the Start Screen type in HWSetup.
2. In the search returns select HW Setup to open.
3. Make changes as necessary and select "Apply."
4. Reboot the computer if not prompted to do so.

If not already installed, the Toshiba Hardware utility can be downloaded from http://support.toshiba.com after clicking "Downloads" and selecting your computer information.

Topgundcp, yes I tries the Esc key, that does not work either.

Thank you to everyone who offered suggestions to try. I read how to do a hard power reset, which is use a paper clip to push the small reset button on the bottom. It is the same kind of hole you use when opening the DVD drive when it is stuck. Got into the BIOS, reset that, took out the bad updates from Microsoft last week, and all is working fine now.

Good to hear that the hard reset worked. Most units now have the CMOS battery, where the Hard drive is accessed from.
