Would a 128 GB SSD be plenty big enough to externally store Windows 8.1. I think it will speed things up.

I have a 64 gig ssd. and 8.1 64 bit uses about 23 gig with no big games or apps.

yeah it would be big enough ,but storage seems a waste of a ssd drive

I think a 250 GB SSD is the sweet spot for Windows 8.1 plus most used programs.

IMHO if you game go with 256 GB, it will save you from having to off load stuff to a spinner when you run out of space. I keep my Documents and Pictures etc on a separate drive but I like to run my games in full from the SSD. 128 GB just wasn't enough for my desktop PC. Now on my laptop, that I don't game on, 128 GB is plenty.

I use an SSD for Windows and programs. A hard drive is used for documents, music and videos. The reason is that SSDs fail without warning and hard drives often give audible warnings that they will fail. This warning gives time to get another replacement drive. It still doesn't replace back-ups.

I did it the other way around. The SSD went into my laptop and the spinner that came out went into an enclosure to be used as backup. I'd rather have everyday speed versus a quick back up or restore. Having an SSD for both would be the cats ass though, especially on USB 3.
