Issue after upgrade to 8.1, unable to open settings etc

Hi,

I am hoping someone can help, I upgraded to 8.1 last night and all was ok until I started my PC this morning.

The PC boots up and I can log in ok but I am unable to open any browsers, use the start bar or actually get in to most programs, use the search function or get in to any settings as it just hangs.

I can get to the start menu through charms and I can access My Pc from there but opening control panel hangs as well. I am also unable to get to the troubleshooting and repair.

I have tried to restart and press and hold the shift key but it just hangs again when restarting, also tried to log out of my profile but that also hangs.

I have tried to boot from a USB with a windows 8 ISO to get in to the repair from there but that doesn't seem to work - Also the windows product key shows as 'not available' ??

Does anyone have any ideas on how to actually do anything with my now expensive paperweight that has a pretty but non-functioning desktop screen ?

In the elevated command prompt run sfc /scannow also Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
See if that help any.

I have tried that and when I use the sfc /scannow I get -
Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service

And when I use Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth I get -

Error 50

DISM does not support servicing windows PE with the /online option

I have managed to get the system restore to start so hopefully that will be ok.

Any ideas why your mentioned commands would not work ?

Only thing that comes to mind is a bad install. Perhaps to start over and reinstall Windows.
What were you using before and where did you get Win 8.1 upgrade or update?

I was on 8 before and installed from a prompt that came up on the start screen.

The system restore has worked and I can actually get in to all the settings now, It's still on 8.1 do you think trying to install again would be a good thing to do ?

Go ahead but get the update through the Windows Store.
