My memory is that on Thursday (Aug 14/2014) updates were installed when I shut the computer down in the evening. It started up normally on Friday. However this AM Saturday Aug 16, it will not boot up. I first get a screen saying "Preparing Automatic Repair" with a long pause. There is then a screen that only lasts a few seconds which says "Diagnosing your PC". When it goes away there is a screen with some options and a dialog something like this: Automatic Repair, Your PC did not start correctly, with the Options to Restart (which just starts the cycle again), or Advanced. One of the advanced options is to Refresh your system. I tried that, but it asks for a Windows install disk. I only have a 8.0 disk, and when I put it in, I get a message that the disk is not valid. Perhaps it is looking for version 8.1 which I do not have on a disk, and just updated to 8.1 on line. So that is a no go. I am afraid of the Restore Point option because I am unsure is restore is turned on, and when the last restore point might be.
Any suggestions? It seems highly suspicious that this may have been caused by the last MS update. I use a SSD for C: which has Windows installed on it. I also use a Win 8 Storages Spaces for data storage. Two HDDs are combined to one D:.
