windows 8

I have had windows8 for about a week now, whilst I think it is designed for touch screens it can be adapted for mouse use. I find it is getting easier and is a very stable system, I don't think I am going to buy it and get my fingers burnt like I did with vista. Which did'ent take long before windows7 came out. You could say the same happened with ME with xp. So while I have learnt how to use it I'll wait to see what they bring out next before purchasing. While it is a lot different to windows7 and what went before I think I'll be happy using windows7 for a while longer.:dinesh:

Tony, Win 7 is a fine system If you think MS is having a hard time getting rid of XP, wait until the try to get rid of 7.

But Win 8 is not another Vista. Vista actually IS better than XP if you have a powerful enough computer--and most people didn't. 8's problem is the huge learning curve with the Metro desktop, but once you learn that, it is a good OS. And it is easy to bypass Metro completely and use the classical desktop.

Yeh but how long before they bring out another operating system I'me sick of paying for two every time.

Valid point, Tony. On another thread, I'm experimenting with the idea that the Win 8 Preview can serve as a free copy of Win 7 for people who are still using XP. And I'm wondering why I would need to buy the full Win 8, when I'm getting everything I want on the Preview version by downloading free apps off the web.

If they sell it for the price of a Snow Leopard ($29.95), then it will sell. At the usual Windows prices there will be few takers of the retail version - I think.

Kevin, I researched it on the web, and this is official: nobody knows.

One tech site predicts different versions will run from $100-250, based on the prices for Win 7 versions.

Another tech site predicts that MS will be making most of its profits from sales connected to the Metro Interface (X-Box Live, MS Store, etc.) and he predicts that the upgrade edition might be only $75, with no edition being more than $300. He also points out that the low price of Apple's new OS could frighten MS into lowering the price.

A forum site points out that consumers just bought Win 7 and might not see a need to upgrade, and that would also pull the price lower.

But officially, MS isn't talking, so these are only intelligent guesses.

WAIT JUST ONE MINUTE!!! u can buy mac OS's?
Sure you can. But if you run it on a PC, you are violating the Apple EULA that does not allow that. Many people do it anyhow.

You can't run OSX on your PC without hack it, this is really of topic and probaly not allowed to talk about it.

I think I was talking about Snow Leopard. But as was said, no need to persue the subject because it is not legal.

One thing Microsoft could do, is reduce the number of potential SKUs. For Windows 8, there's speculation we'll see:

Windows 8 ARM edition
Windows 8 Starter Edition
Windows 8 Home Basic
Windows 8 Home Premium
Windows 8 Professional
Windows 8 Professional Plus
Windows 8 Ultimate
Windows 8 Enterprise

There's also at least one new SKU to add to that list:

Windows 8 Professional Media Centre Edition

In the end, that list may well turn out to be incorrect however, when one looks at the number of Windows 7 editions, it probably won't be far off.

Whether MS will actually do anything about desktop prices remains to be seen, but they really do need to think hard
