Minimized windows and Quick Launch icons

My minimized windows on the Taskbar use to be rectangular while my Quick Launch icons were square. Now they are all square, and there is no way to tell a minimized window from a Quick Launch icon for the same application. Is there a simple way to make minimized windows rectangular rather than square? Thanks.

Hello Brink, here is the screen shot you have requested. The first two icons on the left of the Start button in the Taskbar are Quick Launch shortcuts, the next two are minimized windows. You can see that all of them have the same size and shape. There is no way of telling a shortcut from a minimized window.

It doesn't look like you have Quick Launch on your taskbar.
The 4 icons to the right of your Start button are all highlighted to say that they are open and running. When you hover the pointer over the icon, do you see a thumbnail preview of it's opened window?

I assure you that the first two icons on the left are program shortcuts pinned to the Taskbar and the other two are minimized program windows. When Firefox is closed, and you hover the pointer over the first two, you only see the name of the program shortcut; when you hover the pointer over the other two, you see the thumbnail of the window.

Odd. Does restarting explorer or the PC sort it, or does it keep happening afterwards?

It's called "troubleshooting" the problem with you since I'm not sitting at the computer.

Since you don't want to troubleshoot, I hope you find a solution soon.

Right click on a blank area in the taskbar, and click Properties.
Set Taskbar buttons to Never Combine, and see if that is what you want.

I'm on Win 7 right now, but Win 8 should be the same.

@ groucho: those are simply programs pinned to the taskbar on your screenshot.
