how do i formt cd to copy files

pop up says files ready to be copied to disk but when I put a disk in new popup says there is a formatting problem

Unless it's an CD-RW (ReWritable), program you are using to burn disk should take care of it during burn process. That should not come up unless there is something wrong with media (disc), machine or program.

Perhaps you're trying to use a type of disc your program can't handle? In my experience, CDs don't need to be formatted to use them.

I'm not a fan of the built in burning program (which was originally provided to Microsoft by Roxio). Download one of the popular free programs and use that.
