If you aren't actually using those hundreds of programs simply un-pin those that aren't of interest, they are still available on the Apps screen.

"And I can't right click an icon..." Well actually you can it just requires some extra clicks. Once you have everything set up then a few extra clicks for adding the next icon is no big deal. Right click on the start tile, at the bottom of the screen click on Open File Location, copy the shortcut of interest to the desktop,... done!

"Nor can I easily log off/on... and There there are the power off..." Use Gibson's Wizmo GRC*|*WIZMO - Steve's Windows Gizmo** Nice icons for one-click functions. You can place them on the desktop and/or in the Start screen.
With all due respect, wake up and smell the roses!

Why would I pay hard $$$$, (about $400 Aussie for retail version), to get a later version and hopefully improved OS that requires me to do hacks, (to get a Start Menu), or "extra clicks" to perform functions, or be forced to use metro when I didn't need to do any of this in Windows 7 already?
It's all about consumer preferences. I'm not paying Microsoft to go backwards

    Interesting times.

The thing is, why are Microsoft forcing us to go through metro? Keep it by all means, but put in an option to by-pass it and boot straight to desktop; and also put in a start menu and orb. How hard is that? Then everyone's happy.
It is not hard for them to do that. They know it would make everyone Happy.

They are deliberately not going to do it.

They want to keep forcing the metro stuff at you - they are trying to get you online into the MS clouds. Once they have you - you are unlikely to leave.

Whoever has the biggest online userbase will be all powerful.

    That is why.

SIW2, you have some good points. MS really is trying to get us into cloud computing, but we already are. Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia, and others are cloud software. And MS already has the largest online user base.

Me? I remember when it was the ultimate computing sin to put any personal details online. Then came Facebook and the n00bs put it all, and slowly, those that know better followed.

Yes, that's included in what I meant when I said in an earlier post they're trying to create one platform for Desktops, Laptops, Tablets, Notepads and Microsoft iPhones. Click this link HERE to a relevant post on this trend in ConceivablyTech forum.

Unlike web sites such as Facebook, Twitter, etc ... the real push is towards downloading apps, and more significantly, cloud data storage. They've simply joined the gold rush ... like Zone Alarm, Avast Anti-virus, Dropbox, Acronis, Nero, etc, etc.

There is no way I'm storing confidential data in the clouds where security is at the mercy of the web site controllers, even though all my stuff is encrypted with Axantum AcCrypt. And at 71 years of age, I'm not desperate to join the teeny boppers on iPhones or Facebook, etc. Why would I when it's so much more fun to play on forums like this already?

It's one thing to make a conscience decision to access these services, it's quite another to be forced, simply because the Operating System requires it. Unfortunately, this is where things are headed and it's not just Microsoft. Fortunately, there are some major obstacles that will prevent complete transition to the 'cloud' for the foreseeable future.

I have no Google, Yahoo or Twitter or Facebook account, Microsoft is pushing to far, if you want to create an account they insist on the fact that you better to have a Microsoft Account and what about those "sign-in info for the services you care about. (some info will be sent to Microsoft but you can change it later) " WTF, the majority of peoples will don't even know and will not change it....... and about this info ; are Microsoft keeping on their servers my login info for stuff like my paypal account ?

I think it's about time peoples wake up

"You have to create a user name and account for each PC you use."

    Oh nos not that!

And has anyone noticed that it's "Sign in/out" now instead of "Log in/out"? heh

    Hi,

Of course they're suggesting you'd use their services for your convenience. What did you expect?
Still, no big deal. Just ignore it and do as you've always done.

    Cheers,
