Hi really hoping someone can give me a hand to sort out an issue I'm facing. I normally don't ask for help but I have tried most normal options. From the start I had issues updating to 8.1, all the normal issues people have faced. It finally decided to work and all was well. It was stable and I created a system recovery point and all was working well. Then I let it install the new update for nvidia graphics card and also another windows one. Then restarted and then went through the normal pre-boot procedure however instead of loading the normal login screen in windows 8 all I get is a black screen that flashes a dark grey close and see the network icon in the bottom right and EN bottom left the back to black in a constant loop. I've tried booting to safe mode and it doesn't work. I've tried using system restore and that doesn't work as it says an antivirus or something is preventing access to a file. I've tried using sfc/scannow three times and every time I can't get it to restart properly even to get into the recovery options. I don't have any other recovery media and Microsoft sent the windows 8 CD and it never arrived (lost by postage company). I've tried to use Dism aswell and that gives me error 87? If someone can tell me how to roll back the driver from command prompt I'd be very appreciative. Thanks for any help you can offer!

Unclear about the problem you described but I assume you did get Windows to boot and run SFC + DISM. Try to uninstall the most recent updates prior to the problem.
  1. Control Panel->Windows Updates->View update history->Installed Updates->Uninstall a program
  2. Look in the list for the most recent updates by date, hite light it and click uninstall.

OK, sfc will not work offline unless you use the switch:
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows <==== use the drive that it is assigned to instead of C:

Note: When booting from the recovery disk, you'll get the drive letter as X:, this is not your Windows drive but it's the WinPE. You need to find out the drive that your Windows is assigned to. Most of the times, it's C:

There is a built in command called: pnputil to allow you to delete a driver from command prompt.
Type: pnputil /? on how to use it. You'd need to find out .inf file for NVIDIA and use it as an argument.

Tried the sfc scannow it ran successfully but hasn't fixed any issues. My problem is the same as alot of the other people are reporting a black flickering screen after upgrading to 8.1. I tried rolling back the driver and couldn't get the commands right. Would it be possible to suspend or remove my avg antivirus from cmd to try and fix the (0X80070005) error at the end of system restore?

Won't finish rebooting

New Dell computer (1 month) working fine, updating Windows 8 and stuck on "setting up" with the circle of death spinning on the screen. My instinct is to unplug but told not to as it would .....be bad? I think it's a scare tactic to make me she'll out money while it's still under warrante. Ctl-Alt-Del not work. What other choice is there.

Hello all I have a custom built pc with a fresh 8.1 install. My computer updated and shutdown and now my computer will not attempt to start windows just sits at BIOS screen. I had this problem a few weeks ago and did a fresh install thinking something was messed up with my install. This is my second attempt at this is there any solution other then a fresh install and disabling updates?

Thanks, Mitch
