Explorer.exe crash and system hanging

Hi guys,

I had a random explorer.exe crash. I was playing Hearthstone, then I closed the game and closed the battle.net client. Pretty much straight after closing those two programs, my explorer.exe crashed and my desktop wallpaper was reset to the default windows blue. The funny thing is, I could still Alt+Tab to other programs (although I couldn't actually see the little scrolling menu that normally appears during that command) and I could still interact with the other applications as normal. I was browsing youtube and chatting on steam still. Eventually google chrome also stopped responding but the video's audio was still streaming in the background. At this point I basically had to restart my computer. I tried to open the task manager to view my memory activity first, but I couldn't open the task manager but I could still open the Ctrl+Alt+Del menu.

I have no idea what caused the bug, it happened on the same computer once before, maybe two weeks ago. The symptoms seem to suggest a memory leak or something? Perhaps related to the battle.net client or Hearthstone specifically? There's no error codes or anything and when I hit restart and booted back in, I don't get an notifications in my Action Center etc.

System spec are as follows:
Windows 8.1 64-bit
CPU: Intel i7-2600k (stock)
RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance
GPU: GigaByte 670 WindForce OC 4GB (Driver 331.65)
MB: Asus P8 Z77-V LK
PSU: Corsair HX850
System Drive: OCZ Vertex 3 120GB
Storage: Western Digital Black 1TB (Raid 1) - This is the drive with battle.net client & HS installed on.

Any ideas? - Thanks!

Okay I just found a post about this somewhere else, apparently it's an issue with Hearthstone on windows 8 as of the latest patch. In case anyone has the same problem, here's the solution:

  1. Go to the Hearthstone Build on your computer (use the show in Explorer option from the Battle.net app, or go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Hearthstone)
  2. Right click the Hearthstone.exe and go to properties.
  3. In the Compatibility tab select "Run this program in comptability mode for:"
Set the field to Windows 7.

Thanks anyway, I hope this helps someone else too!
