Why should we even have to press the Windows key to get a "Start" screen. Wouldn't the best way be for a user just to type anything on any space on the desktop and then this would act as an "automatic search". So if you typed EXCEL on the desktop area EXCEL would start - or if you didn't have EXCEL then you'd be given say a GOOGLE search. The search should allow wild cards such as E**EL for example.

When you typed on the desktop a little search box could pop up and open automatically so the user would see what they were typing too.

You don't. Let it boot to the Start Screen, then the user can just start typing for what they want. Or click the tile for the program. The stuff that user is going to use everyday should be pinned there anyway. Isn't searching (as in using the search function) an App or Program every time you want to use or do something going to impact productivity? Why type excel every time you want to use it, why not just click a Tile? Or an Icon on the taskbar? Also if they had to open the charms bar every time they wanted to do a search it would take even longer. And that's assuming they know what it is and how to open it in the first place. Most of the threads here are asking how to turn it off, or make it go away.

In my honest, perhaps limited, opinion, Windows is quite navigable on pretty much any device with a little diligence and education.
I think the crux of the issue stems from when Windows 8 first launched and users clicked the 'Start orb' then exclaimed, "HOLY CRAP, where did my desktop go and how do I get it back!"
It's a ghost that's haunted us ever since!

(I don't think it's ever been a preference issue til MS bombarded us with the alternative)

The original Start Screen in 8.0 was a pain. Everything you installed put a tile or tiles on the main screen, including readme's and links to the authors web site etc. It filled up quickly and was a bit of a mess to navigate. Now in 8.1 installed programs put their tiles on the All Apps screen, and you just pin the one Tile you actually use to launch the program to the main screen. Much better IMHO. Arranging the tiles still needs work though. I'd like to see an option to turn off the auto shuffle/arrange. The two by two just doesn't work for me.

Now that I've used 8.0 and 8.1 for a while I can pretty well find what I want without having to Google it first.
