Hi there!

I recently built a PC after years of owning Macs. In general it has gone very smoothly, but I'm now running into an issue where Windows Explorer will freeze. This will go on for minutes at a time, and (generally) then resume functionality after what appears to be it restarting itself.

During this time I cannot get to the task manager, but other apps not using Windows Explorer work just fine.

Here's the details:

Windows Explorer

Can anyone help me out on resolving this? It has happened multiple times within the past couple days and I am relying on this machine for work.

Here's the output of that test:
"Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

Any other ideas?

Then it does not appear to be corrupted but may be infected. Download and run a full scan with Malwarebytes (Free) and also your antivirus program. Are all Windows Updates installed?

You may have to do a Clean Install of Windows to fix it. Back up all your data.

Thanks for the reply, I ran a scan with Avast which found nothing, then with Malwarebytes which found a pup.searchprotect file, which I quarantined and removed.

Is it likely that an Windows would have already become corrupted? I installed it less than two weeks ago.

Thanks again!

It may have been a bad install to begin with. See if a Repair Install will fix anything

You try with safe boot to see if you still have the problem:
  1. Win+R->msconfig
  2. in the boot tab, tick on safeboot and restart your PC
  3. Open File Explorer

If you don't have any more problem then chances you might have some incompatible Shell Extensions
