Hello. I bought a top of the line computer for the speed. Worked fine until now. I keep it clean with Stopzilla and Norton. I am looking for a recommendation before I spend any more money. What programs really work. I tried the one provided on this site and it got stuck and ultimately rejected. Any help I can get would be appreciated. I need details as I am 65 and know very little about computers. My son set me up and he died. Thanks:)

This program looks good, but before I pay is it going to do more than stopzilla or Norton. gopcpro Pro 2014 - All-In-One Secuirity & Performance Tool

If using W8, Windows defender and Malwarebytes. Ccleaner as needed. I've been doing this for years with no problems.

Of course I'm only 64 and a young whipper-snapper compared to you.:sarc:

I don't know much. My laptop is Hewlett Packard. I asked for speed and the man at the store said something about the computer having 8 and a lot of what you need for speed. ram??? gb????? Worked like a charm for 18 months. Now it is really really slow. I tried Norton and stopzilla to clean it up. Did not help. The only new thing I have done recently is download Netflex. I think that was a mistake. Also I had to delete and then bring back my libraries: video, music, documents. What do you know about gopcpro Pro 2014 - All-In-One Secuirity & Performance Tool

Honestly I wouldn't bother with paid for software. The free ones work just as well.

CCleaner is a no-brainer.

Revo Uninstaller does some cleaning.

RegCure is worthy.

Can't think of any other programs from the top of my head right now.

If you mean Norton antivirus, I used to have it & it slowed things down for me.
I don't know anything about Stopzilla.

I recently got Netflix & it hasn't caused any slowdown.
Quite good audio & video quality.
My PC is only 1.4 GHz -- 500 GB -- 8GB RAM.

You might try https://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER

You might run

sfc /scannow

&

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

in administrator command prompts. ---

Others here will probably respond also. :)

netflix is not your problem. could be norton. i stopped using norton about 12 years ago because it created more problems than it solved.

also, if you have more than one antivirus program running, it will slow your system to a crawl. that's probably your problem.

Indeed, you should get rid of Norton and Stopzilla. I would not use either of them, even if they were for free.
You can use Bitdefender Antivirus Free + HitmanPro 3 (it scans at startup) to keep PC fast and safe for free.
As for the optimizers, they are meant to polish the system a bit, not really to speed it up noticeably.
CCleaner is a good choice and you can also try Wise Care 365 Free - do not forget to defrag HDD.

Your touchpad might stop working, so unless you use a mouse, better leave it.
By the way, by any chance do you have SSD HDD? What is your computer name?
An exact name and model like: HP Pavilion 15t-n200 Notebook or something like that.

hold on a minute. your asking that question tells me you need to get some local person to work on your computer. if you try anymore.. you will have a much bigger problem than you have now.

I think you need to slow down! Do one thing at a time and look for improvement, if any before going to the next item.

Uninstall at least one of your anti-virus programs and restart computer.

I would not install HP Support Assistant, it can also cause problems. Check out the HP Forums, many have problems installing it and more have issues uninstalling it. If it's an HP you more than likely already have it and if so I would get rid of it but that's another story.

You probably need to run the Disk Clean-up utility for starters. If not sure what to check for deletion just ask.

Do you know how to post screen shots?

If you update drivers, I suggest downloading them from their website, not from Microsoft.

I would also suggest asking for help here instead of paying for it.
There are some good helpers here.

Just suggestions. :)

If you want honesty - I will give it to you. As someone else suggested, I would highly suggest you get rid of Norton. It is one of the sloppiest pieces of programming I've ever seen, and has been that way for years. It absolutely puts a stranglehold on your system resources and there are so many alternatives out there that do it so much better. You can however, significantly reduce the chance of being maliciously compromised by using either Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox as your browser, instead of Internet Explorer. We can deal with Norton later though. You can start using Chrome or Firefox immediately if you want - they are free and very easy to install/use.

Given you are using a HP, your primary problem is going to be all the factory installed proprietary software (and trialware) that comes pre-installed on the machine when you buy it. Many, if not most, of these "programs" and/or "utilities" can be uninstalled at best, or at the least, be removed from your startup folder so they are not starting automatically in the background whenever you boot your computer (and consequently always running in the background, chewing up memory). By removing them from "startup", you will still be able to run the programs when you want to, however, they just won't be "monitoring" your activity in the background.

In order for us to do this, we will have to be able to see what you have installed, or running in the background. Take these steps, and let us know if you don't know how to do any of them:

1. Hold down your Windows Key and push X at the same time (Windows Key + X)
2. Choose Command Prompt (Admin)
3. Highlight the line below, rt.click it, and choose copy:

wmic /output:c:\startup.txt startup get caption

4. Go to the command prompt screen and put your mouse pointer on the blinking screen cursor, now simply push the right mouse button - it should paste the command exactly as you see above. Hit enter. If you see no errors, and it seems like nothing happened, then it worked.

5. Now Hold down the Windows Key and push E at same time. Double-click your C: drive and look for the "Startup.txt" file we just created. Open it. Hold CTRL button and push A at same time. This will select everything. Now hold CTRL again and push C - this will copy everything.

6. Come to this website, login and start your reply to this thread. In your reply Hold CTRL and push V - this will paste all your startup entries so we can take a look at what you can disable (or not).

I made a short video on---
