Late Adopter

I am a late adopter of Windows 8. I started with MS-DOS and eagerly bought each new iteration of a new OS and was fairly happy except for ME, a disaster for me, and Vista, which was lacking drivers. When Windows 8 was approaching I read articles, postings on forums, and saw pictures of the painfully cute "Start" page. I decided to wait.

My waiting ended when I bought a new little laptop last week. Of course, it had Windows 8. For two days I hated Windows 8. I struggled with a very different OS. I was very, very pleasantly surprised to learn that all of my legacy software that I deemed essential, even my 15-year old unabridged dictionary, loaded and ran without any problems. My Office 2003, which meets my needs, with Word and Outlook work fine. I had to re-install Windows 8 four or five times, I lost count, because of errors I made in setup. One gave me a "Start" screen with a third of the boxes only having color but no graphics and no labels.

On Day three it started making sense. I basically abandoned the "Start" screen and use the "Desktop" with the quick start toolbar just like I did with Windows 7.

I'm still learning my way around but it's quite workable.

I might finish learning Windows 8, now, about the time Windows 9 comes out.
