Windows download from Microsoft matches the system from which you initiate the download.
How did you do the upgrade?

If you purchase the download on a system running 32-bit Windows, your downloaded setup file will also be 32-bit.
There is no way to upgrade from a 32-bit copy of Windows to 64-bit, or vice versa.
You must backup your data, create bootable media, and do a clean install. After youre done, youll need to reinstall your programs and restore your data.

Unless I'm misled the iso download from the

page has both x86 and x64 versions. It gives step by step how to back up and install. So I'm curious what "the guide didn't help" means specifically?

I think you'll find you don't get a choice. If the system your doing the download on currently has a 32 bit version of Windows installed that's what you get. It's assuming your going to "upgrade', and you can't upgrade to 64 bit from 32 bit. To get the 64 bit version your PC has to be running a 64 bit version of Windows. I think its the same deal as this, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create

I guess that's it then. Sorry. But it was hard for me to think someone, even MS would make you download 3+ GB to get 32 bit and 64 bit OS without letting you wipe the drive, boot it and go. Way too much trying to control the user instead of just the machine.

    Sorry to OP.

You can wipe the drive and do a clean install. One of the options in the link I posted lets you create install media to be used latter. You can create an ISO or a bootable thumb drive. I used the thumb drive to do clean installs. The gotcha is you only get 32 bit or 64 bit depending on what version of windows your running on the PC you do the download on. This is done so you can upgrade on the spot if you want to and skip the create media part. You also only get core or pro depending on what key you enter.
