  • I have a Samsung laptop (model : NP370RSE). When I start it doesnt boot ( File: /BCD. Error code 0x000000d). I have made a recovery disk (USB) from Win 8, but the choices I get seem to "remove" my files. I have some pictures on the HD I would like to save.

When the recovery says "remove" is it the same as "erase"?
Any idea how I get my pictures out of the harddrive prior to formating/reinstallation of Win 8?

Hello Frafroe, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Yes, remove would be the same as erase.

If you haven't already, you might see if doing an automatic repair may be able to fix your boot manager.
If not, you could create a Live Peppermint DVD/USB on an other computer, then boot from it on your computer to hopefully recover the files with.

Peppermint3 - Create Live CD/DVD/USB To Use For Emergency Backup - Windows 7 Help Forums

Hope this helps for now, :)

How to find files from hard drive using Peppermint

I tried to run a Recovery using Win 8 but I never found out how to find where the recovered files were stored.

I made an bootable USB with peppermint 3 installed. I am now able to start the laptop I am not able to find the files I look for using the File manager in Peppernint. If you look at the picture attached I think the hard drive where pictures and other files (in My documents) is the one called "977 GB volume". When running Win8 I believe it was labelled "C". There was also a password protection when I started Win 8.

Any idea how I find my old files in My documents and My pictures?

I have been though the thread in Windows 7 Help forum. seem like other users have had similar problems.
I think the Samsung is built on a AMD64 platform, will this make any difference to which Linux software thats should be used?

No it shouldn't. Try looking in the other locations to see if you may spot it.

Been looking in all "drives" for my files. A stupid question: How do I use File manager the right way to find files? I have a folder called "Work". How do I search through the entire hard drive to find it, how do I write the search string?

As someone who has run into the same problem, and has lost all of a customers data, I have developed a "better safe than sorry" method of data recovery from a non-bootable hard drive.

Anything you do that can write to the drive, can wipe out valuable data. READ ONLY is what needs to be done, and the safest way to do that is to remove the hard drive from its parent PC, and slave it to another PC where it can be read, (read only) and the data copied off of that HD and saved to the main drive on the PC. Then it can be safely burned to DVD's for safe keeping.

I've had to do this for my customers, more times than I like.

Then I run CHKDSK /f /r on the slaved drive, from my main drive and OS, and more times than not, that restores the drive to BOOTABLE condition.

If you were nearby, I'd say "bring in over here and I'll fix it for you".
But before you permanently overwrite your data files, you might want to get that little PC to a professional PC Tech that can possibly save your data for you.

Good Luck!

The data that you are looking for is either in 366GB Volume or 977GB Volume. From peppermint File Explorer, double click on 366GB Volume then click on Tools from the menu->Open Terminal Windows on current folder, then type: find . -name Work -print
If it does not find it then do the same for the 977GB Volume

Edit: In Linux, everything is case sensitive. So if the folder is Work then you should type Work with capitalized W.
