Solved Help! Quick!

I created a vhd file and cant put it in the recycle bin because every time I try it says Cant open file because it is open in System, I try again but it doesn't work. HELP NOW! I've just lost 400gb of disk space help!

Look in Task Manager under Processes, Right click it if you see it and end task.

I can't end the task...

No worries, got rid of it, and for anyone else who wants to get rid of it, open task manager by either right clicking on the start button or searching for it in the charms bar, then click on details and click on explorer.exe and end process, now you probably wont see your task bar or desktop so just restart your computer by holding the power button until shut down turn it on again and log in, look for the file and either put it in recycle bin if small or permanently delete if its too big.

Not doubting your solution, but I'm not grasping how that works. I understand your procedure, but would not explorer.exe process start along with others upon boot as usual? What changed in the hard reset process to allow you to then delete the file?

Well, it wouldn't start identifying wheter files can be deleted or not so when you request it it'll do it.

There must have been something wrong in PowerShell that didn't allow the Cmdlet to delete anything. The reboot fixed it.

As far as I can understand this, stopping the Explorer was and is totally unnecessary. You cannot delete a mounted vhd file because as the error message tells it is still being used by system. Nuccii's solution in post #4 is one of he two ways to solve this by unmounting (releasing) the vhd, the other one being a reboot which will also release the vhd. Stopping the Explorer process has non whatsoever role in this.

Hence, the solution to this issue is to unmount the vhd or reboot.
