Restoring files from external harddrive to Windows 8

I'm clueless when it comes to computers so I'll apologise in advance if this doesn't make a lot of sense, but I'd really appreciate some help.

My old Sony Vaio broke the other day, so I've just got a new laptop. The Vaio was Vista, but now I'm on Windows 8.

I'd been backing up my Vaio to an external harddrive, but all I ever did was run the backup and let it get on with it. So for example, within the external harddrive now it just has a list of the dates I ran a backup, followed by 'Backup files 1', 'Backup files 2' etc. I'm hoping these include some of the documents/files I had on there, but I can't be sure. What exactly will have been backed up here?

I've been trying now to restore these files on my new laptop, but I can't seem to find a way. Is it possible?

Thanks for any help, and sorry if I've posted in the wrong area or haven't been clear or anything.

What program did you use to do the backup with?

I think it was literally just called 'backup and restore centre' which I presume was just a microsoft program.

Unfortunately it seems that that is just for Windows 7, on 8 I'm not getting the 'backup and restore' option that it's saying I should be.

In addition to the help already offered, I suppose you could connect the external drive & use Explorer to either move or copy to your new computer.

Will that work if I can't tell what the individual files are though? For example, instead of seeing 'Essay draft,' 'Dissertation' etc in the folders, they are all just listed as 'backup files'.

Post a screenshot of your SSD files.

SSD? Sorry, like I said, I'm useless with computers.

I've just been searching through the files on the harddrive and I've had to go through everything individually, but I've managed to retrieve a few of the more important things I was looking for, so I'm relieved about that at least.

Just a secondary question too; I've downloaded itunes onto this computer now, but got nothing on it. If I plug my iphone into the computer, will I be able to sync everything from the phone onto the computer, or will it work in reverse and think I'm syncing it with my iphone to take everything off that as well?
