Computer seems to boot twice and takes a very long time

    Hello everyone,

The attached video will NOT win the Youtube film of the year award, however, I hope that someone might be able to help. My Dell XPS8700 is like a 16 year old, friendly one minute and totally nuts the next for no reason at all! The computer DOES boot, but there's no beep and well...I would love it if someone could help please!

    Many thanks in advance...

    James

"This video is Private" is the message I get when I try to view it.
Judging by symptoms it could be
    Power supply
Capacitors on MB going dry or faulty
Hard disk bad sectors or file system
MB, 3v CMOS battery gone empty
If you fix problem with video, something else might be gleamed from it.

OK. just watched it, from here it looks like you might have problems with HDD. Once it boots up check it good for bad sectors.
Have you ever open the case ? After just couple of years something can go wrong with connectors for power and any plug in cards. Since computers are best dust collecting devices ever invented (at least my impression), check for that too. Visually check all electrolytic capacitors on the MB, if any of them has a bulge on top it's faulty for sure. Just one bad one can make problems like that.

Cheers Mike, silly question now, in order to check for bad sectors, do I just run a standard disk check? Image attached...
    Many thanks for your advice

Actually best one would be to download a test program from HDD's manufacturer or Download CheckDiskGUI - MajorGeeks
Download HDDScan for Windows - MajorGeeks
Download Puran Disk Check - MajorGeeks
On the same site/page you have disk testing programs for various makes.
Once you are sure it's/if it's ok, no bad sectors, you should defragment it. My favorite is Disk SpeedUp - Free Defragmenter to Defrag Disk for Best Performance | Glarysoft

Great, much much quicker, thanks Mike! Ok, so there's no beep when I boot up, but I suppose that's not the end of the world...is it?!
It's a PC so it's never going to boot as fast as a MAC, I know that's a dirty word to PC people..!
Cheers though, I'll run this beast into the ground before I go to the dark side...
