    8.1 Shut Down Questions

I am running 8.1 Update 1 and want to system to fully shutdown every time. I have already unticked 'turn on fast startup'.

Do I also have to disable hibernation using the 'powercfg -h off' command? Ideally I want the hiberfil.sys gone.

There is also the issue of different button's doing different levels of shutdown, can someone tell me which each of these do...

    - Shutdown from the charms bar?

    - Shutdown from Start screen power icon?

    - Shutdown from the taskbar Windows button (right click)?

Basically I want nothing cached or saved to the hard drive etc during switch off and have every boot a cold one. I don't know how many things I have to set just to get it to simply shut down!

Can someone clear these things up for me, thanks

Can I ask why you want a cold boot each time?

Because this feature caused a crash in one of my devices so severe it had to be physically replaced and I want to ensure this is not a factor in the future.

Microsoft had made it very ambiguous as to which shut down button actually shuts the machine down. Saying shut down when it's actually some kind of hybrid hibernate is really mislabelling.

Disabling fast start up I think only completes half the process so I need to check what else I need to change.

You might try Classic Shell, you'll have you start menu back and there is a setting for the Shut Down to fully shut down. Among lots of other handy setting like turning off all 4 hot corners and other crap you don't need with out a touch screen

Gee, a man after my own heart!

I too want the computer OFF, DEAD and COLD when I'm done with it.

to accomplish that, all the way back to Windows 98, I've been using a shortcut to Shutdown on my desktop.

The syntax for that shortcut has changed since '98, but it still does the same thing....is closes all open programs, saves all open files and then runs the Shutdown command, present in Every version of Windows.

So you go to your Desktop and right click on any open space and then click "NEW" and then "Shortcut".

In the space for your new shortcut, type in or copy and paste this line:

    %windir%\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 0

Spaces are important, that's why I suggested doing a copy and paste.

I use this myself and set it up for all my customers.
That will cause the PC to totally shut down in just a few seconds, depending on how many active drives you have and how many programs you've left open.

To finalize the process, you should have your PC plugged into a switchable power strip and turn off the strip to remove all power from your PC, then it can't be damaged by power surges or come back on accidentally.

If your bios is set to 'Resume' after a power failure, just turning on the power strip will also turn ON your computer. I've been doing this for years and it's just SO convenient. And, you won't wear out that little power button on your PC.

    Cheers Mates!

I use Classic Shell and just go up the start menu. Same way I did for XP.

Thanks for replies, I'll give the suggestions a go. So basically all button's which say Shut Down are lying!

I just wanted to check, do I need still need to set 'powercfg -h off' if I have already unticked fast startup?

All this just to shut down a computer, boy what has happened to the world?!

    Power Options

Turned off all the extras, sleep/hibernate/fastboot etc

Then changed the Closed lid setting to TURN OFF.

It would be nice if it worked the other way to
    Open lid = turn on
