Yep, you should run sfc as Admin privilege. It works well.

The Windows Firewall is 100% functional and excellent. No reason or other need to use anything else, functionality speaking.

I prefer ZoneAlarm because the UI makes it faster for me. No other reason really.

I hear ya about the notification thing with ZA. Like I say, "Set it and forget it" once you're notified the first time. Windows Firewall works the exact same way, it's just that you have to set the rule up yourself and you will not be prompted to do so.

Ya, ZA can be a pain to get rid of. You can boot to safe mode to clean the remnants.

You can go to that folder, then set it to show the Authors column, then click it to put in alphabetical order. Delete anything by Checkpoint or ZoneAlarm.

In the registry, search for Checkpoint, ZoneAlarm, ZoneLabs, Zone Labs and Kaspersky. Delete anything you find.

And then you could also check the users folder for those. Both your own account and All users.

When done deleting everything, use Ccleaner to clean the registry.

Here is a another good thing to merge to the reg (it's an uninstaller) to rid ZA from the system, to supplement:

In this example, we will block explorer.exe from making all outbound contacts whatsoever.

1) You can make a shortcut and put it anywhere you want for the Windows Firewall. This is the shortcut contents:

2) Open the shortcut.

3) Click on Outbound Rules (near the left side.)

4) Double click on New Rule (near the right side.)

5) The Program radio button is auto selected so now you can just click next.

6) We are doing explorer.exe for the example, so click Browse and find it at C:\Windows\explorer.exe

Click next.

7) The Block the connection radio button is auto selected so you can just click next.

8) There are 3 ways the rule applies and for the example we want all of them. They are all auto selected so again, can just click next.

9) Give the rule a name. BlockExplorer is good for this example. Then just click Finish.

You can now right click the rule and disable or delete it at your discretion.
