Hello to all,
Begining to find my way around. Had Ubuntu 64 bits and it appears to me that W8 is noticeably faster. My first two questions are
1. Does sfc /scannow as administrator work properly? I did a check and got some corrupted file, when it finished! The X2 Athlon +6000 chip and 4GB of ram seem to be running fine.

2. I have attempted to install a free firewall, and it had failed on Comodo, Zonealarm and Window Seven. Say it is not IIRC designed to work with this OS. I was using 64 bit versions. Any freeware firewall that does work?
Thanks for all assistance!

Ya, ZoneAlarm for a fact will not work on 8 until 8 is past RTM stages.

Yep, you should run sfc as Admin privilege. It works well.

The Windows Firewall is 100% functional and excellent. No reason or other need to use anything else, functionality speaking.

I prefer ZoneAlarm because the UI makes it faster for me. No other reason really.

Thanks for the reply Gman! I happen to like the firewall to ask what I want and don't want to allow, just me. And firewall doesn't have outgoing protection IIRC. So I was hoping to find something that works. Window control panel uninstall doesn't work as well as it should, keep finding Zonealarm stuff around. Learning curve.
I am a bit concerned that the sfc said I had corrupted file. Being new and never having had any issues with it, I don't know how to fix whatever problems it has located. Any ideas??
Cheers

Yep, Windows Firewall can easily block outgoing from any program. All you have to do is set the rule.

I hear ya about the notification thing with ZA. Like I say, "Set it and forget it" once you're notified the first time. Windows Firewall works the exact same way, it's just that you have to set the rule up yourself and you will not be prompted to do so.

Ya, ZA can be a pain to get rid of. You can boot to safe mode to clean the remnants.

C:\Windows\Installer

You can go to that folder, then set it to show the Authors column, then click it to put in alphabetical order. Delete anything by Checkpoint or ZoneAlarm.

In the registry, search for Checkpoint, ZoneAlarm, ZoneLabs, Zone Labs and Kaspersky. Delete anything you find.

And then you could also check the users folder for those. Both your own account and All users.

When done deleting everything, use Ccleaner to clean the registry.

Here is a another good thing to merge to the reg (it's an uninstaller) to rid ZA from the system, to supplement:

Code:
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ZAMailSafe]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Zone Labs]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Zone Labs]

[-HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Zone Labs]

Thanks, I've searched the Program files and (x86), went into appdata, couldn't find anything. I will give a look at C:\Windows\Installer.
A second issue is that at this point in my learning I wouldn't have a clue how to set the windows firewall in either direction. Is there a tutorial? Appreciate you time. Will go and look to get rid of all of Zonealarm!

You're welcome. Setting the Windows Firewall rules sounds a lot more difficult than it actually is. Do it once or twice and it becomes like second nature.

In this example, we will block explorer.exe from making all outbound contacts whatsoever.

1) You can make a shortcut and put it anywhere you want for the Windows Firewall. This is the shortcut contents:

%windir%\system32\WF.msc

2) Open the shortcut.

3) Click on Outbound Rules (near the left side.)

4) Double click on New Rule (near the right side.)

5) The Program radio button is auto selected so now you can just click next.

6) We are doing explorer.exe for the example, so click Browse and find it at C:\Windows\explorer.exe

Click next.

7) The Block the connection radio button is auto selected so you can just click next.

8) There are 3 ways the rule applies and for the example we want all of them. They are all auto selected so again, can just click next.

9) Give the rule a name. BlockExplorer is good for this example. Then just click Finish.

---------

You can now right click the rule and disable or delete it at your discretion.

Hello Gman,
Well I somehow got my system to safe boot into adminstrator: cmd.exe, not the GUI.............. Do you know how to help me rescue myself from this mistake? Wanted to make sure ZA was totally gone.
The explanation you gave for setting the outbound rules sounds simple, but it is not. I don't exactly understand all the programs that I have to block, or exactly how. Might you give a few more examples, please!
Regards
Glenn
