Taskbar properties > Navigation Tab > Start Screen > uncheck the first option where it says go to the desktop instead of Start

    hi Alphanumeric,

yes, that is what i do BUT you open something and get redirected to .....you know what.

I think the only solution will be Windows 9, but we will (again) have to pay.

    hi Edwin,

no the Start Menu is ok with the pic that yo show. The taskbar only comes in when you hit the bottom right under the Arrow (which directs you to the apps.

So in my case i do not let it show.

But no matter what you Always get the Desktop screen.

    Question : WHY

Why? Because everything has not be ported to run in Metro. A lot of the underlying Windows features run from the desktop. Control Panel and just about everything launched from it for example. File explorer, the list goes on. Desktop programs run from the desktop, not Metro. Windows 9 as far as I can tell will be no different. The closest your going to get to what you want is Windows RT, but as of right now it still has a desktop screen. No offence, but your an oddball as far as Metro goes. Most are trying to hide the Metro Start Screen, not the desktop.

I'm not keen on applications running in app containers governed by MS or third parties, I liked Windows the way it used to be, native and MINE!

    Alpha,

with around 1200 programmers i think it would not be to difficult for MS to change that.

    Hi there

Have a look at Windows 3.1 -- No menus, just a load of Icons grouped on the desktop in different areas.

In Windows 8.1 simply just create your own desktop icons and link to your own applications - what's wrong with that. !! - much easier than Windows 3.1 (which actually was universally LIKED and successful too).

Two screenshots -- My Laptop with W8.1 update 1 - Desktop Icons including the sports metro app (ringed in Lime green) which I can run straight from the desktop if I want (YOU CAN pin metro apps to desktop quite easily BTW) and an image of Windows 3.1 which is what Windows USED to be -- so be careful what you wish for !! - You can also remove the little arrows in the desktop Icons -- I don't mind them - Brink has a tutorial on how to remove them if you just want the plain icons.

(If you prefer empty desktop spaces - simply pin your common apps to the taskbar (used to be called the quick launch toolbar, or make your own custom toolbar). I think the whole system is actually nice and flexible -- Windows 8.1 is what windows 8 should have been and then there would have been minimal fuss over the loss of the Start menu).

    Cheers

And Atari and Macintosh etc, everything was similar. That File manager was a nice thing, I'm still using Total Commander because of similarities. I used to copy and that File Manager to Win 95 - Win XP until Total Commander came out.

That's fine, but what about NVidia, ATI/AMD, all the printer manufacturers and any other non Microsoft software you might use. It's all coded to run in the traditional desktop environment. I'm not a programmer or coder but I think there's more to it than just what Microsoft does in Windows itself. Plus, as far as I know, there aren't a lot of other people on the planet that want what you want. A totally Metro only Windows. If Microsoft was going to do this I see them doing it in Windows RT. You can't run your regular desktop software on it anyway so all they would have to do is redo what's backed into Windows RT.
