Using Windows without the old Start Menu...possible?

  1. #21

    Just accidentally run into a program that has a feature to remove taskbar completely, use at own risk though:
    "Ultimate Windows Tweaker v 3.1.2.0" I generally advise against stuff like this but if you are so fired up to attempt taskbar removal, so be it.

    After all this discussion the thread title should have been:
    'Using Windows without the Taskbar...possible?'
    Answer:
    Yes but not practical at all!
    Natively you can auto-hide the taskbar;
    or,
    Taskbar Remover which CountMike posted about removes the ui and leaves a black bar, so it doesn't gain the user any 'real estate' anyway;
    plus, there is no way to raise a minimized window immediately!

    I find Taskbar a very good feature specially when minimized, lots of uses for it. It's even better now when Apps can have it too. Yes it may pop up suddenly and cover a part of screen but so does my cat. Neither one sits there forever. It's even better than my cat, taskbar does not chase cursor all over the screen.

    well guys,

    er all are on the wrong foot....

    when i said the old start menu, i meant the old start menu, not the taskbar.

    the taskbar is on the first screen you get when you login, in Win 7, Vista, Win 8 etc.

    So the Tweaker removes indeed the taskbar, but i want the old start-first-screen with the taskbar removed.
    And that is not possible right now.

    So i cannot "Mark as Solved" since it is not.

    Sorry for the inconvenience, but i am also sorry not finding a solution for the problem

    Ok,,,,,, I'm lost!

    We've had a bar at the bottom of our Windows Desktop screen, like, forever, but originally it was called the "Quick Launch Toolbar".
    Windows would come out of the box with that turned off, and during the setup procedure I'd always turn it ON.
    It's the nuts, for quick starting those little Utilities (apps) that make daily computing so much easier.

    Whether it's on XP, Win-7 or Win-8.1, I have a little package of helpers that I keep down there for Quick Access and without having to disturb a program that might already be open on the desktop. Like, my calculator, converter, wordpad, Picture Editor (Photo Filtre) or a shortcut to My Pictures. It's just TOO convenient for me to even think about not having it.

    But in all due respect, I know that many other people don't run their computers the way I do (for max. convenience) so I read threads like this one with interest, but with NO intent to change my own PC.

    Did I mention, that I also run a 24 year old, 16 bit, Game on Windows 8.1.
    Win-8.1 is the first OS since XP that has full 16 bit compatibility. I love it!!!

    Cheers Mates! ( I love this forum! )

    Taskbar and Navigation properties►Taskbar tab►uncheck 'Show Windows Store apps on the taskbar'►click Apply►click OK.
    (that way the Taskbar will not reveal itself when you are here, (the one you want):
