Solved Uninstalled apps appear in search

This is a minor issue but it is bugging me. I have uninstalled "HP Coolsense" from my PC and can't find a reference to it anywhere. But it still shows up in my windows search (the one that shows up from the right) . . with an icon and everything (unfortunately I can't snip that but I could the error that comes up, which is attached).

Is there a way to refresh this? I can't right-click on the entry either--it doesn't do anything.

It isn't:

  • in the list of installed programs
  • in the registry (I searched for "coolsense" FWIW).
  • In the "all program" section of the metro menu
I was thinking this was a Windows Search/Indexing issue--I normally leave that off, but I turned it off and it rebuilt my index and it's still there.

Any suggestions? Appreciate it.

Also some installers such as Inno Setup only delete the files it puts on. It assumes new files created by the program in the program's folder could be settings or data. In this case simple deletion will work.

I don't think it is residual files. In fact when I click the item in search, it is missing. The Program Files (and the x86 variant) was the first place I looked. There's no HP folder or anything that looks like coolsense--I've been removing other HP bloatware and yes I had to remove resitual folders there already.

I thought Revo was just an ininstaller (I have iOBit) . . does it do any good AFTER the fact? I've searched for a utility that will generally search for "phantom" or leftover files, but it always points to uninstallers--which presume you have the program installed in the first place. I suppose I could reinstall it and use iOBit or Revo to uninstall it?

I think this is an issue of Windows Search "hanging on" to a reference that is no longer there. Which would be fine--normally you can right-click and open in file locaiton--this isn't an option as "right click" does nothing. I would think if it was actually picking up a file in the file system, this context menu would be there, no?

What do you think? Just reinstall the software and try Revo to remove it? I'm wondering if it is registry or something in those infamous appdata folders.

Try Revo, couldn't hurt. Might be an idea to rebuild the search index in Indexing Options of the Control Panel

I did the rebuild of the index. And I just tried Revo . . it doesn't offer anything for programs already installed. I'm going to try to install the app again and use revo to uninstall it.

Hi there. Is this search under the "File" category only?

You can take a snip in the Modern/Metro by opening the Snipping Tool > Perform your search > While holding the Ctrl key press Print Screen key > Capture the snip with your mouse > Save to your preferred location.

Windows key plus Print Screen key takes a screenshot and saves it in Screenshot folder your Pictures folder.

Hi there. Is this search under the "File" category only?

Interesting. It doesn't show up under Files or Settings. Only "Everywhere." That seems like a clue . . not sure of WHAT tho.

There it is! I've capped the search, and the result when you click, attached here.

By the way. . I reinstalled the software. That same icon was there (after installing), still with the same error when you click it. It remained after I uninstalled using a Revo portable edition to uninstall it . .

I think you're onto something with the search location (it only showing on "everywhere"). Any further thoughts on that?

I. Am. A. Dipstick.

Cleared search history under Search Settings. Problem solved.

Sometimes the solution really is the most obvious.

Thanks for the help anyway, guys.

I wouldn't say "I. Am. A. Dipstick." You're learning a new system which is quite different. That's all. It'll take a while. :)

Besides, it's ok to be a dipstick as long as you're not 2 quarts low.

Seriously it seems obvious . . but not. It came up the way, say, a search for "PC settings" comes up . . you'd expect those to come out of the search when no longer available . .and maybe they do with a proper uninstall. I uninstalled a lot of HP apps and bloatware and they didn't come up like that.

I guess it was just a glitch.

I'm totally fine with Win 8.1 by the way. I don't get the complaints. I tag my common apps in the task bar--like I did with 7. And anything not there I do a search for--just like I did with 7, only in a different place now. I don't feel the need for a start menu, as I didn't really browse it that much in 7--but I guess folks got attached to it. And I really like the new file explorer (especially the copy animations), and the task manager is much improved.

It just seems faster to me than 7 ever did, and I use 7 still at work, and it feels more bloated by comparison.

Too bad they're dropping it so soon (for Win 9). But once it gets tagged with a bad name, they can't shake it. I still have a laptop running Vista btw . . and I never really have an issue with it either. Besides--I keep all my important bits in the cloud. A complete reset every few years is worth it to revive a machine, and it's easier than ever (because of Skydrive/Google Drive) to set up a new or refreshed machine.
