    .exe files downloaded as _exe

    Hi

On a new Asus Laptop with W8.1 x64, fully updated, all downloads of executable files are suffixed _exe
instead of .exe (underscore exe instead of dot exe).

Renaming them to .exe fixes the issue but that does not fix the problem.

I have seen that there are a number of posts regarding this issue but none seem to have a definitive answer.

I was hoping that someone could steer me to an way to fix this that does not involve convoluted usage methods.

    Regards

    Daniel

Does this happen if you boot to Safe Mode with Networking? See here for how to get to Safe Mode with Networking:

How to Enable or Disable New Startup Options Boot Menu in Windows 8 and 8.1

    See the last Note:
If you disable the Windows 8 Startup Options GUI boot menu, then you will be able to press F8 at boot to boot to the Advanced Boot Options screen.

thanks for your reply, it does not happen in safe mode with networking. I tried downloads from three site and
    all were okay showing (dot)exe.

    Cheers

This might be a corrupted profile. To check this you can try creating a new user profile and check IE from this new one.
If IE works correctly here are MS recommendations on how to fix a profile : Fixing a corrupted user profile - Windows Help

Maybe an easier way is simply to switch to another browser. Chrome of Firefox probably aren't affected.

It's caused by something that is starting when you boot your computer. It doesn't start when you boot to Safe Mode which is why it works there.

Try a different browser, like firefox. See if you can narrow down the issue. If that is ok, indicates it is related to your previous browser.

I tried Firefox and had no problem, Firefox is not an option as this is not my unit and
the owner insists on IE, that is what they are used to and have used IE11 on another W8 laptop
    without a problem.

Since Firefox works it indicates that there is a problem with IE11 :-)
