.exe files downloaded as _exe

Hi

On a new Asus Laptop with W8.1 x64, fully updated, all downloads of executable files are suffixed _exe
instead of .exe (underscore exe instead of dot exe).

Renaming them to .exe fixes the issue but that does not fix the problem.

I have seen that there are a number of posts regarding this issue but none seem to have a definitive answer.

I was hoping that someone could steer me to an way to fix this that does not involve convoluted usage methods.

Regards

Daniel

Does this happen if you boot to Safe Mode with Networking? See here for how to get to Safe Mode with Networking:

How to Enable or Disable New Startup Options Boot Menu in Windows 8 and 8.1

See the last Note:
If you disable the Windows 8 Startup Options GUI boot menu, then you will be able to press F8 at boot to boot to the Advanced Boot Options screen.

Hi

thanks for your reply, it does not happen in safe mode with networking. I tried downloads from three site and
all were okay showing (dot)exe.

Cheers

Daniel

This might be a corrupted profile. To check this you can try creating a new user profile and check IE from this new one.
If IE works correctly here are MS recommendations on how to fix a profile : Fixing a corrupted user profile - Windows Help

Maybe an easier way is simply to switch to another browser. Chrome of Firefox probably aren't affected.

Try a different browser, like firefox. See if you can narrow down the issue. If that is ok, indicates it is related to your previous browser.

I tried Firefox and had no problem, Firefox is not an option as this is not my unit and
the owner insists on IE, that is what they are used to and have used IE11 on another W8 laptop
without a problem.

Since Firefox works it indicates that there is a problem with IE11 :)

Have you tried disabling IE plugins / addons ? Not sure if they get disabled automatically in safe mode. To test it you can try "iexplore -extoff" in the start search.

Have you tried to start IE with Administration rights? If that works I think the user profile is messed up.

Hi

I had previously set up a new profile and that did not fix it.

But running as Admin does, however I cannot set IE11 to run as admin, it has to be a right click "Run as Admin"

The file permissions do not allow me to give full privileges to users, even though there is only one.

Cheers

No, it will just get rid of all tool bars and addons which may resolve the problem.

I'm not sure if this was mentioned, but go to IE's Internet Options\Advanced\Security and turn off "Do not save encrypted pages to disk". Restart IE and see if that works.

If that doesn't work, try this:

Go to regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

On the Edit menu, click add value, and then add the following value:

"BypassSSLNoCacheCheck"=Dword:00000001

What antivirus/security suite is running on that PC? It seems like something is changing them so they are not executable.

Hi everyone,

I no longer have that Laptop with me, the owners decided they could live with it as long as Right Click "run as admin" worked, and it does.

When I can get some spare time on the machine I will try the other fixes.

Thanks for all the advice.

BTW, this seems to have been problem for a long time with no defined fix, the unit does have Norton 360 but I have not found any instances of that being involved in this problem, but there is always a problem.

Thanks again

Daniel

Go to Internet Options->Security tab. Under 'Security level for this zone' there is a check-box with 'Enable Protected Mode' next to it. un-check this box. Restart Windows to see if it fixes the problem.

Hi

that brings up continual messages on security, and make IE11 unusable.
