Is 70 c too hot or pushing it for a motherboard and CPU?

HP Envy jo29nr... Intel Core i7 @ 2.20GHz... Motherboard Hewlett-Packard 1968 (U3E1). This IS a laptop. And a newer one at that.. Just under a year old and well taken care of. I'm getting conflicting answers via google... What do you think? It's around 70 c even idling.

I would say not, that's to hot for it to be, especially at idle , my opinion ,its a year old have you cleaned the air vent yet with a can of compressed air , ,or even better opened it on clean the dust off the heatsinc, most laptops re dusty inside after a year ,even a light coating of dust will cause it to over heat.

I just checked my desktop cpu temp with
speccy and its only 17c

I had thought you were saying "I would say not'' to me taking care of the computer, lol.. OK, here's the deal, any input would be great... I ran Sants Row the Third on it and monitored the temps. The CPU went up to 90 c and the motherboard went all the way up tp 96 c. The GPU geforce 750m was fine). Then the game started lagging and freezing (I actually have another post about that).. This is the only reason I've even noticed the overheating. I've had loptops that felt way hotter that were perfectly fine. This one doesn't feel hot at all. But those temps are high. I recently had the motherboard replaced under warranty, perhaps they did something wrong, or I know they use used parts at HP for replacements, you think it might be that? Or is it possible at ALL that it's a software issue? I really don't want to send it back and wait 3 weeks, if it's possible at all that it's a software issue, I'll reformat and pay more attention as I go along.

don't know ,it seems hot to me ,but if it doesn't feel hot then maybe its ok ,shouldn't be dust issue giving they changed the motherboard.
I use speccy program to give me my computers info, and it gives temps of all device you could check all temps with it ,

A little bit of both. Since the MB has been replaced recently, I would think it is dust free. What they did, might be the heat sink on the CPU was not seated correctly and the thermal paste they use is not good enough. Good thermal paste such as Artic Silver can reduce the temp quite a few degrees.

Software: depending on what you have running in the background that might take system resource to run, For example: Avast, Windows Search etc... those are running in the background and if your HD's (including external are badly fragmented, more system resource taken.

For Laptop, you'll never get a good temp (normally between 40~50) due to the air flow restriction within a small compartment and during summer month, the room temperater is hotter than normal.

Topgundcp, thanks. Yeah, it's not software.. I mean, it's a quad core i7 on a Kingston Hyper X SSD, even if I was running a bit of things, I should be fine. But nothing is really running. I actually just got a blue screen displaying a kernal warning and I wasn't even able to get into my bios for some time and couldn't even swap the SSD out with a HDD to reinstall windows... Thank god when HP mailed me my extra HDD connector cable (some new flat kind that is a PAIN to find even online). they sent me 2. So I swapped it out and here I am back on here. I really don't see how that would cause the MB or the CPU to overheat, but I'll check and be right back.

Yeah, it's still going up to 90c for the motherboard and 96c for the CPU when gaming . I wonder what just happened to my hard drive connector. I don't see how it was heat. Maybe, they aren't like reagular cables I've seen. They are thin and flat, maybe it melted? Doesn't matter, they can replace that crap. I was trying to see if this was my fault or if it could be fixed before I send it to some outsourced knuckleheads that work for HP.

Hello David,
The temp indicated in your screen shot is for your Hard Disk. OP talks about the temperature of his CPU.

it's a quad core i7 on a Kingston Hyper X SSD,
It does not matter if you have a quad core running on SSD. If the the heatsink is not seated properly, you'll have the heat problem.

For HP Laptop, I think the <ESC> will get you the fast boot screen, check if there's an option to allow you to enter BIOS. I have an MSI MB and it does have that option.

I get the same temp if I view it in my BIOS.
All I know is I have a good temp.
If I had a bad temp my program would let me know.
Or I could put my hand on the side of my tower & sense if it was too hot.
Thanks for your input. :)

Actually yeah it does matter that it's on a quad core i7 on a solid state drive because I was commenting on a guy that said something along the lines of too many programs running. I seriously doubt that

Now if what you said about the heatsink is true then it doesnt matter bout the program's it's about the heatsink. Thank you for commenting. I am currently restoring my computer to factory settings on the original hard drive. This is only so I can send it to HP so they can fix this. I already did a restore to a system image from when I first updated to 8.1... and that was with no programs installed and I installed Speccy and it would still go in really hot. So if it still does it on the hard drive the computer came with after a factory reset it's definitely going back. Thanks guys
