A way to access boot menu on startup?

    Hello, i'm using a Gateway Windows 8 64 Bit.

I know how to access the boot menu using the advanced troubleshooting option inside the computer. But, what if Windows 8 becomes unbootable and I cannot log into the machine? There is no boot menu option like Windows 7.

I have heard if Windows will not boot, it will display the advanced options automatically. Is this true?

Also, if I power down my system while it is booting up will I be able to access the boot menu on next startup?

    Hello Windows8Home,

If Windows will not boot, it will usually display the recovery options screen, but there's no guarantee either.

You don't want to hard shut down the computer during startup if you could help it, since that could corrupt Windows.

Option Four and on in the tutorial below are some good options to boot to the startup options menu if you like.

Thanks for the help. Sadly, I don't think I can do what I wanted in Windows 8.

There is no key I can press on startup to easily access the menu's?

At startup, when the momentary 'Gateway' splash screen shows, quickly press Esc for boot menu or F10 for boot options.
(if you don't see a splash screen try pressing either key repeatedly in rapid succession as soon as you press the Power button)

Okay, I just tried that. When I rapidly press ESC at bootup I get a screen that says "American Megatrends" and a whole bunch of other info. It quickly disappears and a distorted "Gateway" logo appears. Then the computer is at the login screen.

Option Four on would let you boot to it from outside Windows. Do you have a recovery USB drive to use?

Follow this one then?? Startup Options - Enable or Disable in Windows 8

The last entry i n the notes sections says:
If you disable the Windows 8 Startup Options GUI boot menu, then you will be able to press F8 at boot to boot to the Advanced Boot Options screen.

See Shawn, I was paying attention

    1. Boot from your created system repair disc.

    2. Go to step 2 in OPTION FIVE below.

This is what option four says. The problem is that it doesn't say how to boot from USB.

Do I just put it in and then it loads?

Thanks for the tutorial Ztrucker, I will try it.

Sorry, booting from the DVD or USB in the step just assumes that you know how to.

For a USB flash drive, you would connect it, restart the PC, press the key (ex: F11) briefly displayed on the boot screen to open your "Boot Menu", and select the USB flash drive to temporarily boot from.
