Can't install Programs on Windows 8.1

New install of 8.1 in April on a new computer build. Around June7 noticed I was losing my usb ports. Went to Restore and only found one. Performed restore. Fixed the usb. Then I tried to do another restore, couldn't. Tried and tried but couldn't create a restore. Then tried to install software for my dlink cameras. Couldn't install. Installer box stayed at zero forever until I tried to cancel in taskmanager... I couldn't then and had to shut down computer. After many attempts to install new programs I made a mistake and did a system refresh. Well, of course that wiped out all my programs. Looks like the refresh worked for cleaning off all the programs (even Microsoft office). Now I am starting over. Something is wrong here. After fresh refresh, I was able to do create a restore point and install some programs. Installed a couple small programs... then today I noticed the same problem when I tried to install Foxit, and Nero. Looks like I'm back to the installer install shield box stalling and then me trying again to install again with no luck. Its not working. What can I do? Does 8.1 need to repaired somehow. I can't go on trying to install some programs and not others... and realize its still broke. I lost 3 months of building this computer and it looks like its still screwed up. I didn't put everything I wanted on this system. Spring came and I went outside. I spent alot of money on these components (over 5k) !! I'm almost ready to call Microsoft and get some answers.

As I'm asking for help here I see that My Nero Install (HOur and a half later) Stalled at around 75% and I get a "Installer is no longer responding" RETRY or cancel. So I'm going to RETRY again. HOPE this works... But its iffy in the future with some programs. I just need to fix this !!!!

My recommendation would be to do a Clean Install, starting from scratch. The refresh leaves to much around that sometimes causes problems.

    Windows Update
Repeat Windows Update as often as necessary until no more updates are offered.

Now start customization, data restore and program installation.

I know it's painful and will take time but in the long run I think you will be better off.

It's a darned nice computer and should be very, very fast. Add a 250GB (or so) SSD and it will be doing things before you think to click

    Ooops why another SSD

Maybe you didn't see my operating system has a 1TB Samsung EVO. Why the extra 250 gig... ?

Overnight again the same problem Still trying to install Nero. Got up and hit retry then it trys to add another component to NERO. Looks like its installing but at this pace It will be another 3 days if I'm not here watching when the retry screen pops up. Seems like an hour between retry screens.

Most that I know want to spend more time than what it is. Of course they start off with saying you have a virus or malware. No No No and even more no. I'm not an expert with windows, but I can say I probably could say I have a BS degree in this area since 1997. I realize windows 8.1 is broke. The problem is of course you only do things once and you don't remember what you did because of that and its 4 years later. Thats why I kind of rely on info here in forums to see if someone else has had the same problem. Theres only a few key programs that I installed over the last 3 months. I was still in the process when the usb thing happened and I just restored and it and of course thought nothing of it. Didn't install any major new programs. When I had problems with a Dlink Network video recorder (322) I bought for security around the house and I couldn't get it to run the software, everything was pointing to a windows problem. Them I tried to install something else. One thing led to another and of course this is the first time I've had this kind of problem. Then of Course I screwed up and instead of a repair I did a REFRESH... and lost everything except windows stuff ( I even lost Office). I Bought Total Recovery Pro and installed it, but I wanted to wait and do a save when I had everthing installed. That was my mistake, because I'm still installing. I had my old computer to fall back on while installing programs and that worked fine but slow. I did the new computer just in time.

Looks like I'll just have to spend next week doing a clean install. I'm just going to put the operating system on the SSD and programs that insist on being on the Crive. Do Recovery with Total Recovery Pro with every program install (I certainly have enough space to do that). Everything was running smoothly until the usb's weren't lighting up. Was there a windows up date the first Tuesday of June? Looking back around the 21st, thats when I realized something wasn't right because of the restore's not working.

I know I'm long winded. Sorry... and thanks for the compliment on my system ztruker. Its my first build and I thought I deserved the best. I'm waiting to add a new 4k 30" monitor when the refresh rates go up to 120 and prices fall. I would get one now but really this is the first gen and there are some problems like the 60khz refresh rate. Heh one note... some of techy's out there I just installed a Dashcam for my car. Black 550... check out this. It works fantastic... I just installed it yesterday. Pittasoft BlackVue DR550GW-2CH dual dash cam review :: The Gadgeteer

Peace... Tomorrow the clean install starts. Wish me luck.

It would be a very good idea to do an Image backup before you start with a Clean install. Do you have an external hard drive or a 2nd or 3rd internal hard drive you could do the backup to? If so I recommend using Macrium Reflect free.

I use it at work and on my web server here at home.

Yes I have 16 TB (4 WD Blacks) empty waiting for the program install process. My plan was the F: to be like the extra C: with programs and My docs etc. Then the other three (for each drive) Photos, Music, Video, and Backup. I'll install the macrium on the C: or could I put it in the programs 2 folder on the F:? and then save it where?

This is my flickr site... Nothing special just photos.

It needs to be installed to do the backup. You can install it to any partition/drive you have access to from the booted windows.

Once installed, use it to create a Macrium Rescue disc so you can restore the image if needed.
