Try to find a newer driver for your Synaptics than this:

    SynTP SynTP.sys Thu Mar 31 21:30:00 2011

    --------

Ricoh (I think) Card Reader drivers must be updated:

    rimmpx64 rimmpx64.sys Fri Nov 17 20:49:50 2006
    rixdpx64 rixdpx64.sys Fri Nov 17 23:07:46 2006

This should work, but if not, you can Google for your hardware id for the card reader. Download/install the newest hit from any manufacturer you find:

    Ricoh Multi Card Reader Driver for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit), XP - ThinkPad T420, T420i, T420s, T420si, T520, T520i, W520, X1, X1 Hybrid, X220, X220

    ----------

    nvstor64 nvstor64.sys Mon Aug 18 21:53:39 2008

is a major issue and even was on Windows 7. What you can do is download the chipset drivers for one of the newer NVIDIA chipsets and try to install only it. It probably won't so you can instead, boot to safe mode. Backup the files I mention:

    C:\Windows\System32\nvstor64.sys
C:\Windows\inf\ <<< at that location, the inf for nvstor64. Could be same or similar name. You can look in the download if needed.

Then after backup, copy/paste the "new" versions from the newer chipset over these files. Reboot to normal and test. It should work and has done so before....but if any problems, replace old backed up files in safe mode.

    ---------

And try to locate a newer driver for this:

    itecir itecir.sys Tue Jul 13 05:50:47 2010

If you don't use it, disable in Device Manager. Reboot.

OK, I checked Synaptics's website. That is the newest driver that I could find. The one on the Dell website was dated from like 2009. I updated the card reader using the link you provided. As for nvstor64.sys, it seems that Dell had a newer version on their driver website that works with my device. And for the infrared reciever, I just uninstalled the device (no disable option). I never use that thing.

I will let you know if I have any more trouble.

Awesome. Good deal and good luck! I would check device manager on the Ricoh for the driver properties. See if it really did get updated to 2012 or not.

In case of further troubles (which very well might be resolved already instead), I'm thinking something like this to extract files from and use, as I described in safe mode after backups:

Well, that didn't take long. Got a freeze again. Why is it that this is happening more often on the Consumer Preview than it was on the Developer Preview. It seems like the operating system should become more stable as it moves closer to completion....

It's not the OS. It's the drivers.

Check my previous post. That NVIDIA storage driver is very important to get as new as possible. There's good chances it will work out as I described. I used to do that for a lot of people and it always went well and fixed issues a lot too.

That 2008 version I know for fact is not well for Windows 8.

I'll download it now and extract the important files, then zip and attach here.

Any files you replace in safe mode, like I said, make sure you back them up first.

If your storage is setup as a RAID device, use the one with RAID in its name. If not, use IDE to do things instead.

    nvstor64.sys goes to C:\Windows\System32\drivers
    nvstor.inf goes to C:\Windows\Inf

    These files go to C:\Windows\System32 - raidco.dll, nvrcoEng.dll, nvata.cat

Reboot to normal mode after. Also, don't forget about checking that Ricoh really did get updated.

By manually copying over the files? Because if you just installed normally, it won't install the new driver files like that.

So it booted fine to normal mode after manual copy of the files? If so, it's a good start.

At first, I just used the install exe. That didn't work, then I tried booting into Win7 and copying over the files manually. That also resulted in a freeze eventually. There is something I am noticing. Often, it freezes when I am moving the cursor using the touchpad. I also just noticed that the cursor disappeared shortly after the computer stopped responding. I'm not sure if this happens every time, but it is worth noting.

This will likely install for you normally, for the Synaptics Touchpad:

Download HP Envy 14-1001tx Notebook Synaptics TouchPad Driver 15.1.6.64 for Windows 7 x64 | Free Driver Download

    ----------

After installing, you can intentionally cause a crash and post the dump log again so we can see the state of the machine and how it is now....see if all or most of those drivers I mentioned are good versions or not.
