unfortunately, MS gives vague messages like this:
    QUOTE from April 10th update:
Microsoft has released an update for Microsoft Outlook Social Connector (OSC). This update provides the latest fixes for the 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Microsoft Outlook 2010. Additionally, this update contains stability and performance improvements.

Now is this stability and performance issues fixes for Outlook or for Win8 in general? Who knows?

they are quite non-descriptive indeed... I had a freeze yesterday, but that was after being able to leave it running for a few days or so. I'm slightly more hopeful. one more month until release candidate!

holy shi*, I have the exact same laptop (Dell Studio XPS 1340) and the exact same frustrating freezing problem. Pardon my language but it sort of makes me glad that it's not just me doing something wrong.

Anyhow, I tested both the DP and the CP previously and both had the freezing problem as mentioned but windows 7 has no problems.

Just to put down my notes, I had also suspected it was a chipset issue. The interesting thing is that the Nvidia chipset here (nForce 730i) isn't exactly perfect on windows 7. There was a freezing issue on Windows 7 a while back related to the "storage driver" which caused the system to basically lock up for a good 2-3 minutes a while after booting everytime. Dell released their own patch to fix this issue since it doesn't seem like Nvidia is supporting this chipset anymore.

That said, I'm fairly certain the issue lies with the chipset, though I haven't investigated enough to figure out which component it is (I ended up back on Windows 7 out of frustration). I've tried not installing the chipset drivers, using the drivers from dell, and using the drivers from Nvidia. None of them seem to fix the freezing problems.

I had considered waiting for the RC before testing again, but I'm not very hopeful that they will fix what seems to be a driver issue.

The 2-3 minute freezes happen on my computer too, every now and then (1-2 times a day)... and it's something that didn't use to happen, before. Maybe I've missed to install Dell's drivers (they're all so old anyway). How did you know the freezes were related to the "storage driver"?

We'll see how it'll go with the release preview (in about 3 weeks). I'm not holding my breath. :-\

There was a thread somewhere else discussing the 2-3 minute freeze issue, and someone found that using a really old version of the "storage" driver (I forget the exact name and I'm not home so I keep calling it this) was able to fix the issue. I unfortunately deleted this after Dell released the patch thinking I wouldn't ever need it again.. might have to dig it out again for Win 8.

I was going well for about a week or two, but then suddenly it started freezing (complete freeze, not 2-3 minutes) again; one day I had it happen 4-5 times. It's been better today, I've noticed that closing my browsers seems to work. This is highly unscientific though, so no promises...

and no, that didn't do it... next theory: it seems to have something to do with the laptop going into a low-power mode, because I have never had it freeze when doing something intensive, such as playing games. I also got a power_driver_state_failure BSOD at some point recently...

Attach the crash dump and that's easily fixed. See top thread of the Crash subforum if you don't know how.

Just to save anyone else with a Studio XPS 1340 the headache, the Release Preview still has the same freezing issues. I tried two installs, one with the latest drivers I could find for everything, and the other with no drivers installed at all (just a clean install). Both have the same issue where the whole machine just hangs forcing a hard reboot.

Looks like I'll be sticking with Windows 7 for a while..
