Solved Windows 8.1 and Asus factory reset

Hi everyone, I recently purchased an Asus G750JM RoG laptop and was concerned with some of the issues I've been reading about the factory reset procedure on the newer models. On the older models I've had to factory reset it was as easy as pressing F9 on boot and selecting to reset the laptop to factory settings, no boot disc/USB or Windows CD key was required, these computers ran on Windows 7.

My computer came with Windows 8.1 factory installed and I had some questions regarding factory reseting this laptop in case it's required in the future. Can I still press F9 while booting and factory reset this computer without needing any sort of recovery CD or my Windows CD key as with past models?

Another question regarding the new "refresh" and "reset" options built into Windows 8 and 8.1, is the reset basically the same thing as the Asus Factory reset on the older models or is it a different method? It seems that on almost all the guides I've looked at people are having issues with needing a recovery CD and their CD key, is there a difference in the two options? Does the windows 8.1 reset still work off the Asus Recovery Partition or if the need arises should I boot into F9? Thanks for the help everyone.

To reset to factory conditions, F9, Troubleshoot then reset. These instructions are on page 84 of the owners manual.

Refresh or reset is covered in this tutorial.

You should create a Recovery Drive

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/5132-recovery-drive-create-usb-flash-drive-windows-8-a.html

Always backup your data on a regular basis.

You may also create a disk image or your entire computer using something like Mascrium Reflect (Free). If anything happens to the drive, you could restore the image to your computer.

Thank you for the information, in the manual I see it states on Page 84 the factory reset procedures, I'd seen this before, but I'm curious if it requires a recovery disc or USB now to properly boot? It doesn't contain much information besides how to start it, which is close to the older models. This is why I would love to know for the future. I see that some people have ran into problems with needing the CD key or a recovery Disk/USB when using the built in Widows 8.1 factory reset option.

So could you explain what the difference between booting into F9 and starting the factory reset and using the built in Windows 8.1 factory reset option is? I don't understand why reseting from Windows 8.1 built in would require a recovery disc or USB and reseting from F9 boot would require nothing? See the concern I have?

I'm aware that my Windows product key is now stored within the BIOS which is similar to my older models, so I figured that wouldn't be much of a problem, but it concerns me looking at guides when using the 8.1 built in factory reset and seeing that the key is required, do I need to Magic Jelly Bean my product key just in case?

Recovering Data is of little concern on this PC as I don't use it for anything besides gaming while traveling, and no data that I would ever need is stored, but I do have a backup point just in case of course.

No disrespect, and I really appreciate the information, but it didn't answer any of my questions, it kind of just skirted around options I could use without explaining anything. I would love a hard no nonsense answer to my questions, I seem to keep getting information that is very vague while researching this, and it seems like no one has an answer.

#1 Do I need my Windows Key or a recovery USB/CD to factory reset from F9 on Asus G750JM?
#2 Do I need my Windows Key or a recovery USB/CD to factory reset from the built in Windows 8.1 factory reset option?
#3 Is there a difference in the F9 factory reset option and the Windows 8.1 built in factory reset option? If so what?

In all cases you do not need the Windows Key, as you know it is embedded in the BIOS. If you want to know what it is, you could use this little utility to find out. See here option 5 http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/27129-product-key-find-windows-8-a.html

#1 - You do not need a recovery disk to perform this procedure. It is using the ASUS factory recovery partition to reset your computer to original factory conditions, in other words, the same state as when you got the computer.

#2 - Refresh from within Windows will refresh windows erasing all programs but keep your data. Reset will remove everything. It is in effect, reinstalling Windows. It does at times require the install disk if certain files are missing.

#3 - Covered by the above.

just curious ,does it say on a sticker on the new laptop that its win 8.1 ,just asking because some I came across were only win8 ,that had been updated to 8.1 after the factory ,therefor the recovery would only be win8.0,likely not in you case .some small retailers are doing the update to make it look more appealing to buyers

Honestly I was curious about this also, the laptop was purchased at a US Best Buy. everything was in the box and it appeared to have never been opened or messed with with the original Asus security tap still attached, but I could be wrong about the shipping state if it was 8 or 8.1. The laptop has no sticker indicating that it is stock 8.1, but when setting it up to my knowledge I did not and it did not update to 8.1 from 8.0. In case the laptop is originally 8.0 and not 8.1 would this cause any issue with using F9 boot factory reset to your knowledge? Or would it be a standard factory reset into 8.0 and I would then have to update to 8.1?
