System process at 100% activity on OS HDD

The process "System" is showing in task manager to be using 100% of the HDD (100% activity, not storage) and running from anything between 5MB/s to 60MB/s. This is causing real problems for me as often programs will just stop responding because System is hogging the disk and they can't load anything. If they don't stop responding all together, they'll be reaally slow! I've attached a picture of disk activity on C for proof of what's happening. It'll happen for hours on end and then just stop all of a sudden. Sometime if I really need to get something done I'll have to restart my vomputer to get it to stop. As I said, this is causing my large problems. Does anybody have any idea how I can fix this? It doesn't seem like normal behaviour at all.

Are you able to see in the processes tab anything that is running high?

Superfetch is running and startup is automatic.
I ran a third party disk "fixer" yesterday on every drive in my PC and they all came up clean. The utility I used is called HDD Regenerator. chkdsk /r implies /f and /f fixes errors on the disk, so if I'm correct I do not need to run chkdsk..?

If it is still happening, open the Resource Monitor (resmon.exe) and look at the Disk Tab. Then put a check mark next to System. That will filter the listing in the other windows to just that one process. Then check and see which process shows with the high Reads/Writes and where it is reading to or writing from.

Give it some time to scan for changes, maybe a couple of minutes. If you see high activity on one entry, or a high response time, that would be a clue.

No need to chkdsk. Does the cpu usage calm down after a while?

Uninstall AVG Free and reboot. AVG at times uses 100% of CPU even when not scanning

Edit: Sorry meant HD usage

Do you man HDD usage? If not, CPU usage isn't the problem here.

High writes are coming from the page file and the NTFS volume log.
High reads are coming from C:\Users\*myname*\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Profiles.xml and the Page file and Also the "NTFS Free Space Map"

Do any of those show a very high response time, something around 4000? The response times should be shown in the last column. If it is not visible, right click the column heading area and select it to show.

Edit: If you don't see anything with a High Response time, uncheck the System filter and check for other entries. Your Task Manager attachment shows the large response time, so it should still be showing that.

My NTFS Volume Log is showing around 500-1200 and sometimes around 3000 for writes. I am not sure exactly which one you are seeing as pagefile.

I do not have the ATI Profile configuration file to be accessed, so about what is the read/write for it?

My Free Space map is around 800 and shows as a Background I/O priority.

It's happening right now. I've attached three screenshots from resmon. The first is everything in System sorted by Read, the second is sorted by write and the third by response time. I hope this helps.

Just thought I would bring it up, but another thread having the same problem was talking about the problem being an AHCI driver. Since I have seen sites mention there have been some problems with the AMD version, you may want to check that out.

http://www.eightforums.com/performa...-active-time-spikes-upto-100-stays-there.html

I'll give that a go and see how it goes for a few days. Thank you!

I was suggesting you find another AHCI driver, not change it to IDE....

A later post has another driver which seems to be from earlier and the poster said he got it from the AMD site. I cannot suggest any driver options since I do not have an AMD chipset and do not use them.

I was suggesting you find another AHCI driver, not change it to IDE....

A later post has another driver which seems to be from earlier and the poster said he got it from the AMD site. I cannot suggest any driver options since I do not have an AMD chipset and do not use them.

Oh right! I'll have a look.

Along with a lot of other problems this was really annoying me so I just reinstalled Windows 8. It's not doing it any more so all's good. Thanks for everyone's help. It's probably good that I didn't find another fix as my OS was screwed in so many ways so it was just the last straw to make me decide to reinstall!

Glad you are OK now. Every so often it is good to a clean install just to get rid of the junk that builds up in the system.
