Why is my desktop vertical instead of horizontal?

My laptop's desktop is vertical, in other words looking at my screen normally the desktop is oriented horizontally as well. In order to view the screen normally I need to orient the laptop so it is like a book. Did something get put into a different mode? Is there a way to get the desktop back to normal?

OK.....right clicked on the desktop and brought up the graphics sub menu. Left clicked on "Rotate". The selections were 0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees. I selected 0 because the screen was oriented 90 degrees from normal. That cured the problem. How it got there I do not know. I'm guessing since W8 was designed for tablets primarily and computers secondly, they had to include a rotate function.

You probably inadvertently pressed Ctrl+Alt+Arrow keys...
