If the remainder of your hardware is up to spec, you should be able to run Windows 8 64Bit. 32Bit without problems.
So far, the consumer release only really shows the touchpad desktop, ( full of "touch icons" ) as the main advantage. But I am cynical. With the various , reliable, tests beginning to come in, its performance is not outstanding over Windows 7. There are one or two extra facilities, many of which can be incorporated into windows 7 with third party add-ons. But I am sure that, before RTM, it will be easier to migrate to, from 7, and, hopefully, will have a much improved performance.

I wouldn't be too cynical, I am using windows 8 right now on a 3 year old Netbook with a single core 1.6ghz Atom chip and 1 gig of ram. I've tried running windows 7 starter on it and its as slow as treacle, with Windows 8 it runs faster than with XP.

I like Metro so I'm probably biased, but for a home user, there are a few advantages. It boots up faster, runs better on older computers, uses less resources, generally feels snappier and shuts down faster(when you learn how to shut it down). :)

Also, for the first time you are able to use Apps, which at the moment are free, these are great for all kinds of things like collating multiple news websites, weather forecasts, games and music and stuff like that. Enjoy, I hope.

Sent from my old single core 1.6ghz Atom Netbook running Windows 8.

I have an old XP-era Tablet PC, so it's not the BEST platform for evaluating Win8 ... but that said, I've not seen anything at all compelling in Win8 to make me want to switch -- quite the opposite. All the hardware on my Tablet works in Win7; some of it does NOT in Win8 and that can't be "fixed". I've used Metro, and while it's interesting, without a touch screen, I see no improvement in it over the Win7 desktop. One of the main improvements in win8 was supposed to be "live" Tiles -- but none of mine are Live and I've found no way to make them work. They did in Win8DP; they don't in Win8CP.

As to performance, it's no faster than is Win7 and, based on the relative difference in noise that the fan makes, it seems to be using MORE CPU cycles and running hotter. It boots no faster than Win7, and doesn't feel any faster at all.

I haven't installed any of my apps on Win8 because I don't feel like deactivating the ones I use every day on Win7 and am not going to buy another copy of each just to try Win8.

So basically, to me, Win8 is a repeat of Vista -- no real improvements and some setbacks.

I think it might depend upon which apps you have. Not all of mine update or are 'live' but several are. The stock weather that came with it updates regularly, I get a constant slide show from Photobucket (now I'm trying to link my account to the app), and the small currency widget from the charms bar updates regularly.

Windows 8 runs really well on this 1.73Ghz Core Duo laptop with a gig of ram. I expect much better performance after upgrading to 4Gb. I don't really know what it ran like before with Vista factory loaded as the system was corrupt when I received the machine so I don't have anything to compare it to.

Thats a pretty harsh assesment based on one old machine, and this is also an early Beta version, but you're entitled to your opinion. I run it on 3 computers, a 3ghz dual core with 4g of ram, a 3 year old single core Atom Netbook with 1g of ram, and a dual core Atom with 4g of ram attached to a 42" LCD TV.
I'm amazed how stable and quick Windows 8 is, apart from a few niggly little problems, some live tiles dont seem to work, but overall its pretty good for an early beta.

There are quite a number of new features in Windows 8, whether you describe them as advantages or otherwise, is for you to decide. Obviously it has the Metro Interface, which you need to use in order to assess it's viability. Here's some other features.

System Recommendations - different scenarios

ReFS
UEFI
Enhanced boot experience
File History
Faster boot/Shutdown
Storage Spaces
Live ID Sign in
Cloud Synchronisation
Refresh and reset
Hyper - V
New Task Manager

There's also a 'Ribbonised' Windows Explorer, new copy and paste, enhanced event tracing. additional device support, picture passwords etc.

I'm sure there are other features, so if anyone thinks of any please add to the list.

It is Beta, but Microsoft are not known for making code changes this late in the development cycle. I seriously wouldn't hold your breath for any additional changes. From here to RTM, it's likely to be bug fixes and tuning. I hope I'm wrong

So far. It feels faster or maybe it feels faster as this computer was originally vista but it feels faster than windows 7 even. But don't know how much that is true technically but I personally find it faster. And this computer is a pretty low end computer so I would say if they can get the requirements even lower and use even less resources that would be a huge advantage. Well to me anyway.

W8 is lighter and faster than W7 but I installed it in my old laptop too and it is too slow and too heavy. Not really functional, but I leave it for an emergency.

It is an Intel Celeron 1.6 GHz single core with 2GB RAM, but the graphic card is very bad.

However in this other laptop dual core I am running W8 x64 very fast while W7 x64 was slow.

Every computer is different and the graphic card counts a lot too.

Yes, but this is a public beta test, on a scale larger than any that went before - unless you are of the school of thought that says that Microsoft Windows releases are always beta until at least the first service pack :)

W8 is no where near as refined imho as W7 was for beta release.

Not to mention that when W7 dropped, the talk must have been 95% and up fully positive, hardly the case for W8. I used W7 beta first day and it was my OS from there on. W8 is no where close to that yet.

Windows 7 followed that 1-legged beauty, Vista, probably the biggest bubblehead in the Microsoft stables. It looked great but stumbled in the Paddock. Of course, beta opinions of 7 were positive.

Windows 7, like XP in its day, was a winner, a hard task to follow. Windows 8 is like Windows 95, trying to change the way that users think and operate, and like Windows 95 will get replaced by something that works much better.

If the past is anything to go by, Windows 10 will be the next XP, and if Redmond is in any way superstitious, will call it Windows X!
