    Recovery with different computer disc

    I am working on a Toshiba Satellite C855D (Windows 8 originally) that would not boot. I tried the repair, restore, and recovery but that did not work. So I used a recovery disc from a Toshiba C55D (Windows 8.1) and got it working. The problem I have is the c855d now shows as the c55d. My question is does the product key come from the motherboard or the software. I am working on the c855d for a friend. Thanks

    Shows as the c55d where exactly? If it's on the System screen open regedit and have a look in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OEMInformation]
    "Model"=
    That info is often entered via script or reg file like this:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OEMInformation]
    "Model"="K75DE"
    "Logo"="C:\\windows\\ASUS\\ASUSLOGO.bmp"
    "Manufacturer"="ASUSTeK Computer Inc."
    "SupportURL"="ASUS"

    For Windows 8.0 and 8.1 the factory OEM key is embedded in the BIOS and is unique to each PC. Custom install media can override that if it has a PID.txt file or an autoanswer file added to it.

    Does it show as activated? My 8.1 install media will not read or use the 8.0 embedded OEM product code in my laptop. It wants an 8.1 code to do the setup. have a look at this.
    Activate retail Windows 8.1 with Windows 8 Product key.

    A registry edit should fix the system screen. the location to check is listed in my other post. Did you just look at the Product ID: on the system screen or actually check the product codes that are in use? They should be different, if they are your likely OK as far as activation gores.

    @ Adamf I didn't think of that. I was thinking it could be the Model: as shown here.

    OK, while on that System screen, click the Advanced system settings option on the left. Then select the Computer Name tab. Now change what is shown for Computer Description. You can leave it blank if you want.
