    Search for "partial match" unavailable?

Hi. After conducting several tests on my Windows 8.1 Basic edition, it’s clear that my search function is unable to search for partial words in a file name. A Microsoft support rep told me that all editions of Windows 8 are supposed to have a search option called “partial match,” which solves that problem (You can find it using Windows Explorer, select your search box, and it should be listed under Advanced Options), but that option is not listed for me.

Is this a bug, or is this feature not offered in Windows 8 Basic edition?

    Thanks!

Can you overcome it with wildcards? I tried a search with *ot* and then turned off partial match. I got the same results.

Huh. I have Classic Shell in and did a search through the Start Menu and then opened File Explorer and did the same search. I entered "po" without the quotes. Both searches turned up the same files. Are you typing in the correct box?

Thanks. I was able to solve the problem with a wildcard. My complaint was that if I search for a known file called something like TheGodfather.avi, and I just search for a non-leading phrases like Godfather, the system will not find the file. However, if I search for *Godfather, it will. So one asterisk preceding the word solves the problem.

I have indexing turned off and use Everything Search. It uses MFT info and is very fast. I still use the search in Explorer for easy stuff. But for most things you don't need to put the asterisk in Everything. It's lightweight and sits in the tray. Not a resource hog. I've used it since XP. Since it uses MFT info it only works on NTFS partitions.
