ODBC Driver Manager Error - Database source name not found

HI! I have been trying to install a product called Thumbsplus which was giving me a ODBC Driver Manager Error - Database source name not found and no default driver specified error.

After trying a fews things I starting looking at the ODBC Data Source Manager in windows 8 and noticed that I could not access the System DNS tab. ( I would get a warning " you are logged on with a non-administrator privileges. ) even thought the account Is an administrator account. So I logged off and entered in as administrator and still the same message.

Something is wrong and I suspect it has little to do with the thumbsplus program as I should be able to enter into the system dns tab without receiving this error message.

Can someone plz shed some light on this issue?

PS: If I say OK after the dialog message the manager with open up and allow me to click the add button but since I dont know how to add the apropriate info there I did not go further, hence to say the error message probably did cause thumbsplus to not install correctly.

Here is a video of what happens

The "non administrator" message you are getting is very annoying but it will still let you add a system DSN. It is a known issue but nothing something you should be worried about in this instance.

That being said, I just installed the application in question and was able to without issue. It also didn't create it's own DSN. During my installation I selected the first option for the database creation "Shared database but separate settings"
This creates a Microsoft access Jet database in "C:\ProgramData\ThumbsPlus" folder.

Not sure if this matters, but do you have MS Office installed?

Yes I do have office 2007 installed with Ms-access. So How do I get the Thumbsplus database installed then with the driver that its asking for and what is the driver?

I had another response which was pointing to Windows 8.1 having the issue look below..

I am not sure which path to follow as long as one fixes my issue. :)

Database error <5015.8036>- Cannot open thumbs plus (ThumbsPlus v9 Support)[/h] by Daan van Rooijen , Netherlands, Wednesday, June 25, 2014, 01:27 (27 minutes ago) @ webcandesign

Several more people here have reported problems getting ThumbsPlus to run on Windows 8.1 64b. Apparently that Windows version doesn't support 32-bit ODBC connections to Access-type databases like ThumbsPlus requires. Other programs are having the same problem with Win 8.1. Unfortunately I haven't heard of any working solutions yet.

Ah, I was not aware you were on a 64 bit system. My current environment is 32 bit which may be why mine worked and yours didn't. You can set 32 bit odbc connections in x64 you just need to launch the 32 bit odbc environment. It may be that the program itself is designed to just look for a general odbcad and is grabbing the 64 bit version instead of the odbcad32. This sounds like something the vendor will have to resolve in an update, not something you can resolve yourself.

As an aside, are you able to get the application to install at all? If so, it looks like you might be able to create a new database using a different database type/driver. At least according to this page. ThumbsPlus Database Support

The problem with this method is that you will need a dedicated database host running something like MySQL. You can run this on your own computer but it seems like a lot of hassle for a bug that should be fixed. If you are not familiar with client/server databases I would not recommend this route unless you just feel like learning something new.

hmmm, although I do like learning new things, this is not one I am willing to learn at the moment, I got enough on my plate :)

thanks for all the replies and your time.

I least now I do have a better idea of where to start my support ticket. :)

I have an idea but I will need to get to work on my 64 bit machine. I'll try it later and report back. There are a couple of threads about using old jet drivers and forcing them in the registry. I'll let you know in about 8 hours.

So, I installed this on my 64 bit machine and I didnt run into any trouble. I don't really know anything about the program but it launches and it creates its own little mdb database and it's reading from it.
I checked my 32 bit ODBC administration and there is not a specific database installed but I do have an msaccess user DSN (this is installed by default in my image)

Here is what it looks like. Do you have an MSaccess data source under User DSN? On the drivers tab, do you have microsoft access drivers? thumbsplus.png

If you mean System DSN, it only has my own data source for an enterprise database that I connect to. No other system DSN.
