(After Restore)There was a problem resetting your PC.

So, one day I decided I wanted to do a backup using AOMEI Backupper, just for safety. It backed up, and a few days later my hard drive corrupted. So I bought a new hard drive (same size and RPM as original) and went to restore the backup.

One the recovery disk that AOMEI created booted up, I learned that AOMEI only backed up the Partitions, and not the Partition Table. So I used Partition Wizard to give my HDD a GPT partition table (the same that my computer had preinstalled) and created the partitions to restore to (AOMEI won;t create the partitions; it just restores to them), I made each partition the size and label and location as it had when I backed it up.

After restoring the partitions, and about an hour of using the windows 8 install disk for the command prompt (this guide: Qlik Tips: Fix a Windows 8 boot issue ), I got my PC to boot again.

Then, just to tidy up, I went to Restore my PC, and got the error: "There was a problem resetting your PC.", a windows quickly popped up trying to "fix" the problem, then promptly disappeared after doing nothing.

After searching (both through the internet and my pc) I found that my computer had my recovery partitions ID-ed improperly (both were labeled as "Healthy: Primary), so I set the id of the partitions to DE94BBA4-06D1-4D40-A16A-BFD50179D6AC, which is the correct GUID for a recovery partition and it's companion Recovery Image partition.

However, that didn't solve my problem.

SO I opened the command prompt and used the command:
reagentc /info to check my recovery status and got this output:

Code:
C:\Windows\system32>reagentc /info
Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) and system reset configuration information:

    Windows RE status: Enabled
    Windows RE location: \\?\GLOBALROOT\device\harddisk0\partition2\Recovery\WindowsRE

Boot Configuration Data (BCD) identifier: 39bd2139-82b6-11e3-a87e-c641f6f23ca9

    Recovery image location: \\?\GLOBALROOT\device\harddisk0\partition6\RecoveryImage

    Recovery image index: 2
    Custom image location:
    Custom image index: 0

REAGENTC.EXE: Operation Successful.

It looks like a positive output.

I really cannot figure out what went wrong, so any help is appreciated.

Curious, was it an image backup that you did with Aomei Backupper?

Your easiest solution would be to do a clean install with your Windows 8 disk. I hope that you have a separate backup of your data files.

I see that you are using Windows 8 Standard. Your best bet would be to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro 64bit

Yes, it was an image backup.

Data isn't my problem, I'm using a laptop that came with Windows 8 installed on it, and I can't really upgrade (I can't afford it).

I know the easiest route is to reinstall Windows, but I just want to make sure that I don't have any other solutions first.

Aomei was not the best choice to do an image back up, Macrium Reflect would have been a better choice.

From what I seen your best and easiest solution would be to reinstall. Far less headaches and aggravation.

AOMEI was the only backup software I could find that could backup an entire hard drive to the same drive, while the computer is booted into Windows.

Is there any other solution? I really don't want to have to reinstall Windows.

As I see it, you have no other choice. You could have had it reinstalled by now instead of looking for a solution.

For your info, it is always preferable and safer to do an image backup to an external drive.

I don't have a Windows 8 license key, just the OEM key that came with the computer, which will not register a retail Windows 8 copy. And I don't have a windows 8 install disk either.

If unable to install using " genet "'s suggestion you may order the recovery disks from Asus for a nominal fee.
