did you set the dvd disk to act like a usb device when you put the blank dvd In the drive ,it will format the dvd disk and the disk will then act like a usb storage until you finalize it ,if not the files will do what they are doing ,if you set the blank dvd to be used in a cd or dvd then you have to burn them to disk before you shutdown the laptop .

iam actually burning 12gig of music right as I type this ,some from iTunes media folder some just stored on the hdd .I am using setting to be used in a cd/dvd rom. iam just using windows file manager to do this no third party software .

Yes it is set as usb device, but every time I drag and drop a file onto it and restart the pc, it is gone. If I were to put a new dvd disk in, then it would work. However there is still plenty of room left on the current dvd, this is like the third time I have had this issue. is there something else I could do/ there must be a software issue

Can one assume you are using DVD-RW or DVD+RW discs?
R = Recordable, once RW = ReWritable, can be added to or erased and reused.
I use Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator for the few times needed but tend to just use the R discs, great for archiving and generally cheaper in the 100-pack than the old floppy disks. A CD holds up to about 700MB while a DVD holds up to about 4.7GB [4200MB] and a DVD-DL [Dual Layer] holds about 8.0 GB [8000MB].
