Task Scheduler works in XP but not in 8

I am able to open a document using task scheduler in my Windows XP machine, but not in my Windows 8.1 machine or my daughters Windows 8 machine. Is this a Windows 8 bug?

I am able to open the document by hand, but when I wait for the time that Task Scheduler has assigned to open the document, nothing happens. On the other hand when I do the same thing in my XP machine it opens correctly at the assigned time.

I have cleaned my computer completely and reloaded the original operating system then upgraded to Windows 8.1 but it didn't do anything to solve the problem.

    Thanks

What does the scheduled task look like? Can you post a screen shot?

Sorry, I was away visiting my daughter in Colorado, just got back last night.

I think you need to launch word and pass the full path to the .doc file you want opened. Something like:

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\winword.exe" "C:\Users\temp\Documents\Filters Fast LLC RMA.doc"

    Edit:

I tried just launching a word document (.doc) from Task Scheduler and it worked. Took about 20 seconds after the specified time before it actually opened the .doc file.

These are the directions I followed, only substituting Word (.doc) for Excel (.xls): Starting excel file with task scheduler

Go to Task Scheduler, on the right click on "Create Basic Task...". Give the task a name and click next. Select a trigger (Daily in the case you mentioned here) and click next. Set the time and recurrence period and click next. In the Action, select "Start a program" and click next. In the Program/script text box browse for your Excel file and click next (leave the other text boxes empty). Click on Finish. I just tried this on my PC now, and it works.

    Thanks a bunch.
What I found is that I need to have the command you gave me in a batch file.
You create the batch file using Notepad, and save it as filename.bat
That batch file has the following line: "c:\path\filename.xls" (the quotes are needed)
For the task scheduler, use Create Task and not Create Basic Task; this gives you more options.
For Triggers and Actions in the Create Task function, click on the New button; then it displays the windows you see in Basic Task but also allows you to configure for WinXP.
In the General tab, set configure for WinXP, logged in or not, highest privileges.
In the Actions tab, Program/Script box, enter cmd
In the Add Arguments box, enter /c start "" "path\file.bat" (note the spaces)
In the Conditions tab: Wake the computer.
