Solved Need windows 8.1 to STOP auto-rotating my photos

Windows 8.1 consistently (incorrectly) rotates my photos when I upload them from my camera to the computer.
This was not a problem with Windows 7. I need a fix or a workaround.

I purchased a Windows 8.1 laptop when my Windows 7 desktop was struck by lightning, in order to continue doing my work until my next desktop comes in from the factory.

This function, makes my work impossible to complete.

I want Windows to DO NOTHING to my photos automatically. Is there a program, registry edit, or workaround that solves this?

What program are you seeing them rotated in?

Hi xt6x, welcome to Windows EightForums! :)

It may depend on the device you use, the angle of the shot and/or the resolution it gets saved in. In my experience, it seems Windows imports photos in landscape orientation regardless of the source.

I don't use any software. I just dumped them into a folder on the desktop, and some of the photos automatically rotated (both in thumbnail and gallery view). I use the same camera and memory stick I was using with Windows 7 ... and never had this problem when dumping them onto my old PC.

The problem is even more irritating than you describe. If you ever upload a photo from windows 8 to e-bay for example you can't tell if it will be rotated again through 90°.

The issue is the EXIF data. This is usually set by your camera (you've not said what you are using though) so it will respect portrait mode. Instructions to turn it off are here:

Windows Photo Gallery: frequently asked questions in the "What does it mean to rotate pictures on import?". You might want to try unchecking the "rotate pictures on import".

Edit: Also check the check box on Import Settings (see picture below also) - this is in the "More Options" bit of the "Import Pictures and Videos" dialogue box that you get when you plug in your Camera.

The 8.1 default is to have "Rotate pictures on import" set on (checked).

Thanks for the link ... and you are right. I am using this laptop to limp along on for my business, which happens to be selling on eBay ... and it has been driving me nuts.

I was not even using Windows Photo Gallery at the time, I was just viewing the photos in the preview mode, thumbnails of them, etc in the folder.

I just tried to import photos into Windows photo gallery (from my other file folder, not straight off the camera, as I have already cut and pasted all of them and don't have them on the memory stick anymore) and whichever way I have the box checked, it leaves the picture auto rotated.

Do I need to use the photo gallery program to import photos straight from my Memory stick instead of cutting and pasting them onto the desktop? If so, I guess I want the auto-rotate checkbox, unchecked?

Thank you for the help.

Also, if it matters, my camera is a Canon Powershot SX130 IS.
I had the same rotation issue with Photobucket when they "upgraded" their site a year and half ago or so ... but they have since resolved it. All photos I uploaded (even though they were correct on my PC) would randomly rotate on photobucket they way Windows is randomly rotating them now.

I can't find the flag for cut and paste - there must be one. You can either import them into photo gallery (with the flag off) or go to auto play settings in control panel and select "import pictures and videos" on memory card and perhaps external drive sections - then you get the second dialogue box when you plug in your camera.

The alternative I found here seems a bit impractical for more than a small number of photos..

http://www.eightforums.com/software...ng-autorotate-images-gallery-viewer-apps.htmlIn a nutshell, User Chinatree seems to say:
- Open the photo in Windows Photo Viewer
- Rotate it
- Go to the next or previous photo
- Go back and re-rotate it to the correct orientation

I still need to play around with it a bit to make sure, but I just imported a test batch using Photo Gallery and it kept the photos in their original orientation (whether I had the checkbox clicked or not). Which I am happy with. Even after pasting the photos into new folders they kept their original orientation.

While playing around with the original photos that I had just cut and pasted onto the computer (and uploading some of them to eBay) so far it seems like that when I upload the files they appear in the orientation I took the picture and completely ignore any rotation that the folder view has done to them.

Is that the natural behavior of 8.1? That is to ask, does 8.1 just DISPLAY the photos in what it deems the "correct" orientation when I view the files, but does not actually alter the photos? That's awful.

You got it. Crap isn't it? You can not tell if Windows has rotated based on camera settings or you have yourself. In the first case it will upload rotated through 90° (as Windows doesn't change the meta-data on the jpeg) in the second it will not.

Just tried my first large batch of pictures by importing through Windows Photo Gallery (instead of a small, test batch) and problem still occurs. Pictures import exactly the same whether the checkbox is checked or not (very odd). Looking forward to the end of the week when my Windows 7 PC comes in.
