Solved Hi there...

I'm new here. I bought a Toshiba laptop with Vista loaded from a co-worker for $20 with a virus that had taken over the system and he didn't have a system recovery disc. I told him I'd see what I could do, and if nothing else it would still load music and you could surf on it.

That brought me to Win8 after looking for a recovery disc from both Toshiba and a fresh install from MS.

I have an XP network at home supporting a Boeing 727 flight simulator and I really don't know too much other than XP. I guess you could say that's the OS I cut my teeth on as far as learning my way around an OS.

I am really liking Win8 so far. I haven't had anying problems with crashing or re-booting. All programs seem to be running fine including O&O Defrag, Google Chrome browser, iTunes, etc., though I've yet to figure out how to get the Win8 system to see the other systems on the network. Not urgent, and I'm sure that will happen in time. Even the German language pack is working fine.

Right now, I'm just enjoying my $20 laptop. With Win8 it was like getting a whole new laptop.

Ja, it wasn't much money for sure. Viele dank für das (die?) Willkommen.

I'll be sure to check in regularly. I'm working on tethering my Motorola Droid to the laptop. Not as easy using PDANet with Win8 as it was with XP Pro. I'll figure it out eventually.

Tschüß!

The drivers for the laptop probably arent loaded, have a look in the Device Manager to see whats missing, you'll probably have to go to the Toshiba website to get the latest Windows 7 drivers.

Thanks Bill. I'll have a look over there in the morning. I already downloaded the mousepad driver and have that working. Nothing over there it seems will get my fingerprint scanner working. It is in the device list, but the drivers apparently won't work correctly. It tells me I need to connect the scanner.

$20 for a not-too-old laptop? That's awesome. What model? Got any other co-workers who want to sell their stuff?!?!

This guy had a huge windfall on his tax return and replaced his laptop, bought his wife a desktop, and bought his mother a new desktop.

When I received the laptop from him it wasn't good for much with the virus that was aboard. I figured it was worth $20 bucks to see if I could save it.

You might have to install the full chipset drivers, thats what I had to do on my netbook to get everything working, try to find out what the chipset is, and hopefully that will solve your problems.

It may not be your fault if you caught viruses, but if you have no images to fall back to, you have done poor planning.

As far as I can tell, all of the hardware is working now. I only had this a day before I wiped the drive with Win8. The fingerprint reader is working now, the touch mouse is working, including the scroll function, and I can tether my Droid X for mobile internet access.
