.txt file type association won't stick

I work at a company and we just went through an internal network change which required a transfer of my user settings to a new account. Everything seemed fine after the switch but now I can't set my .txt default program. It used to be notepad++. It's now set to "Not selected" and if I change it, it goes right back to "Not selected". This is very annoying because I do a lot of text editing.

I've tried setting the default program from Default Programs -> Set Associations and from the right-click context menu. I'm running the latest Windows 8.1.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Does it stick if you set it to notepad? Or it just won't keep any setting at all?

Hello Howitzer, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you like, you might see if downloading and merging the .reg file for the listed .txt option in the tutorial below may be able to help. It will restore the default association and registry entries for .txt files, and hopefully allow you to set it back to Notepad++ afterwards and stick.

    Hope this helps for now,

It won't stick to anything. I set it to notepad, the Set Associations dialog refreshes and after it's set to "Not selected".

That fixed the problem Brink. Thanks again.

Yes David Bailey that's what I was doing. The difference is mine didn't say "Keep using notepad" because it was "Not selected". The association was set to "Not selected" and would stay that way even after changing it.

Brink I am having the exact same problem with my Windows 8.1 not remembering to assign "Notepad 2" 64bit to any text file. I followed the Default Programs instructions, and tried even associating just Notepad, but whenever I try to bring a text file up, Windows still is asking what to use. Am I doomed to uninstalling Notepad2 or must I download the .reg file you have here. I'm thinking Notepad2 is breaking something. It worked for a few days correctly but not now.
