Can longer login my laptop, changed ISP

I updated my laptop from Windows 7 64bit to Windows 8 64bit and forgot about it for months and months and months

Then I changed ISP and, again, did not login to the laptop....

Now when I try to login the "Welcome"wheel turns and turns then returns to the login prompt. It says "Locked" near the wheel....

Anyway I can login without have to re-install?

You need to make sure you are connected to the network, before logging in with your Windows login. This has nothing to do with your ISP.

You don't need to be connected to a network/Internet to log in with a Live ID or Local account. Not being able to log into Windows has nothing to do with switching ISP's. I'm not sure what's going on, but its not that

Are you logging in with a Live ID or local account? Are you entering a password?

Okay, I'm a bit wiser about the ISP

I could have changed my modem too???? About the time I changed ISPs I changed my modem (I think)....

So it may not be trying to connect to the old ISP, it may also be trying to connect to a no longer existent modem????

Could this be the problem? If it is, is there a solution?

If it can't connect to the net? If I can't login, I can't change/affect the net connection?

I never understood the difference between "a Live ID or local account", sorry. My login was my then email address and I did have a password and the process seemed to accept my password as it sat with the spinning balls(?) for a while before returning to the initial Windows 8 screen. I tried to login in a second time and got the same spinning "balls" and "Welcome"....

    Thanks for your responses

The default is via Live ID, you use the email address and password you setup online with your Microsoft Live Account. local account is just username and password like you did in the past with Windows 7 and earlier. So you managed to log in? If yes you must have miss typed your password.

as already said ,if you are trying to login to win8 ,it has nothing to do with isp until after you get into win8 and then try to use a internet browser to open the internet

With the 8.1.1 update. You will actually get an error that you are not connected to the network. When you try and login with the Live ID.

Okay, I've just noticed the word "Locked" on the login screen

Out of curiosity I put the laptop to sleep and woke it and typed in a completely wrong password and it did the same thing. If the password is wrong shouldn't it just say so?

Come to think about it, I may have entered the wrong password and locked the login??????

I have a Windows 7 desktop and a new Windows 8.1 desktop which I have been using for the last few months. All 3 passwords are a variation on one password so I may have forgotten the variation (for the laptop) so may not remember what the password WAS for the laptop.

Another thing that made me not remember(?) the laptop password is that it has a fingerprint reader I used to use for logging in. When I updated to Windows 8 the fingerprint reader was NOT supported which added to my not remembering the password

How do I login in now?

If I can't with or without the password? Can I just install Windows 8.1 over it (the laptop)? I bought 2 Windows 8 packs

I suspect the word "Locked" speaks volumes about my problem

If MS ever makes Live ID mandatory I will switch to anything but them. Sure glad I've always stuck with local account.

You could try enabling the built in administrator account and reset the password for your account.
