Does this mean that both of these have the same effect of battery life

Leaving plugged in permanently on full charge
    or
Using the laptop on battery till it drops to about 50% then charging to 100% - repeat this

I always thought that to maintain the battery at its best it needs to get some usage (I might be getting confused over older style batteries though)

Might be best to follow manufacturer's recommendations, safety issues are different thing from battery life.

    Very true

Not sure if the message about optimization for me is coming from the manufacturer or if its a windows message

If I leave my laptop on charge with the battery on 100%, after 2 weeks I get a message saying I should switch on the optimized option to maintain battery health/life

More of a trouble could be caused by sudden return of power, either from voltage spikes or repeated loss and return of power. Whenever possible, disconnect power to machine (be it laptop or desktop) until sure power has stabilized. Some power networks, specially in smaller places, are more susceptible to those variations and all electronic devices as well as fridges can be affected. Good ground to all devices in the dwelling is very important. That also include TV/ antenna/ internet cables as well as phone lines.

Didn't put the battery in? Why not? Best you get her a desktop with a UPS which contains a xxxxx (so she could shut down safely in case of power failure).

Ah, no, that wouldn't work Like I said when new my laptop was new lasted 6 hours of normal use. After 3 1/2 years of being plugged in all the time it is 5 1/2. Don't worry about it. If you have a NiCad battery you probably couldn't run Windows 8 anyway - they have been Li-Ion for years.

EDIT: She is right about the wires though - I have one of those robot vacuum cleaners you set to clean the flat every day at 11am or whatever when you are out. It does not like wires at all (or anything small in its path).

I'm old enough not to ask women "why they want something just like that". Gave up on that years ago.
