spontaneous shutdowns

About once or twice a month, Win 8.1 will spontaneously shut down and require a cold boot. I've never had this happen in 20 years of using other versions of the Win OS. There doesn't appear to be any obvious cause - it's happened during times of no user input or while typing an email or whatever. Any ideas? Thanks! ...Steve

I see by your specs you are still running Vista OS. Maybe time to upgrade to Windows 8.1, it may help fix your problem and have your system more up to date.

Even though your Specs say Vista, I assume you are concerned about a machine with 8.1 on it.

Have you tried running the sfc /scannow & Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth commands ?
They work with 8.1.
Not with Vista.

I put them in a batch file for ease of use.
Here is a picture of them in Notepad:

You can scan it yourself if you wish:

Here it is for downloading:

View attachment dism.bat

If you care to try it, after downloading it right click it & click Properties & Unblock it:

Then right click it & click Run as administrator:

It takes about 2 hours or so to finish.
It might help solve your problem.
It won't hurt to try it. :)
